Shot a buddies .357 Blackhawk today. NICE Fun gun to shoot.
...While it lasted.

After about 70 rounds or so it "locked up".
The little door that opens to remove the shells wouldn't open.
My buddy dismantled the whole thing and we found a small broken piece. I couldn't tell ya what it was.

Anyhow, we called a gunsmith and he mentioned sending it to Ruger. My friend has had this pistol for several years and has a sentimental attachment to it, so he is skeptical about sending it.

Anyhow, I want to know what kind of warranty ruger has and would it be any good without papers?

Anyone else have similar trouble?

Is there a DA version of this gun, or at least similar DA?

Did I ruin by friends gun?
feeling kind of guilty.

thanks,

From what I heard & read, Ruger does have a good warranty program. Your friend my be better off & calling Ruger and informing them of what happened.
Good luck ;)

I know the feeling about hating to send it back -- I've got a Blackhawk 357 that occasionally pierces primers, and I've yet to send it back to them.

As I understand it, though, Ruger is very good about warranty repair. It just costs a fortune to mail handguns these days due to the shipping rules the common carriers (FedX, etc.) have implemented. If he calls Ruger, I'll bet they tell him to ship it on back and they'll "look at the problem" and probably take good care of him.

As for a DA version, look at the RedHawks and SuperRedHawks.

OK, first thing, Ruger will fix it no questions asked. They're real good about that sorta thing. Shipping costs are all that might happen.

Second, if what broke was the "Pawl", and it seems possible (guys, any other opinions?) you can get one aftermarket from Power Custom that allows the cylinder to spin BOTH ways. It's called the "Freewheel Pawl", comes with good installation instructions - look under "revolver parts" here:

http://www.powercustom.com/

Third, Ruger SAs are mechanically simple and reliable, so you did NOT break it. Not unless you brewed up some really psycho handloads or something.

Fourth: if the shipping costs are high, parts are available at www.brownells.com and these guns are pretty dang easy to tinker with. The Power Custom instructions for fitting their pawl are good, and cover the full disassambly/reassembly needed. One serious option is to buy the Power Custom pawl ($35) even if the stock one is OK, and while you have it open sort out what broke, buy that at Brownell's then reassemble everything. It might turn out to be cheaper doing that than pay shipping to Ruger and in the end, you get a cylinder that spins both ways for faster loading.

But if you don't feel comfy taking a screwdriver to it, cool, Ruger will deal with it no problem.

I sent back a 10/22M to Ruger after having it for over three years. They knew that they had a problem with the extractors from day 1 but never issued a recall even though I had sent in the registration. They put in the new extraction system and sent me a letter apologizing for taking so long (three months) to fix it along with some Ruger goodies (cap, key chain, patch) . My .454SRH locked up after I had it about a year, They got that back to me within a month.

Actually Ruger does not have a warranty for any of their products. But, I wish manufacturers of other mechanical items had as good a warranty on their products as the non-warranty Ruger has.

:neener:

Sure they do.

Limited Lifetime Warranty

Sturm, Ruger offers a Limited Lifetime warranty for Ruger Golf Club heads covering any defects in materials or workmanship. External finish or normal wear and tear is not included. We will repair or replace Ruger Golf Club heads at our discretion during the lifetime of the original purchaser at no charge to the customer, including parts and labor, other than customer shipment to Ruger. We will pay return shipment to the customer. This warranty is null and void if the damage is caused by misuse/abuse, alteration, unauthorized repair, or addition of parts or accessories to the club head not manufactured by Sturm, Ruger, which are not covered by this warranty under any circumstances. This warranty is given in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied.

Oh, you meant guns? They have the best warranty - they fix them. But you're right, they don't have a written warranty. The "warranty" statement included with every gun explains why.

:D

Do they have a guaranteed MOA for their clubs?

"Our club heads (when professionally installed) are guaranteed to give you an accuracy of 15 MOA or less. This guarantee applies to Tiger Woods only. For all you other duffers, there is no guarantee either express or implied.

The Power Custom instructions for fitting their pawl are good, and cover the full disassambly/reassembly needed.

Jim:
What you said is an encouragement to me. I bought the Freewheel pawl but have never installed it. When I talked to several gunsmiths about putting it in for me, they were afraid of the job! They seemed to think there were some particular challenges to getting this in right. But you seem to have had no problems with the work required. I'm fairly handy -- is this a doable desk-top job for the masses?
