I've heard from two different people now that Thompson Center was bought out by some other company (which nobody can seem to identify), and that their new production stuff, or at least just the Contender series, is of decreased quality? Is there any truth to this?

If so, how can I identify older specimens when browsing the used market?

T/C was purchased by Smith & Wesson back in 2007. In January 2010 S&W began closing the Rochester, NH plant and began moving all T/C production to S&W's main plant in Springfield, MA.

I'll let the serious T/C folks here tell you if quality was compromised as a result.

google Mike Bellm contenders or EABCO for info, you will find it all there.

Just read some of his recommneded "remedial" checks. It's all a little disconcerting, but I think I get what he's saying. Doesn't really seem like a big deal.

I suspect that TC has been busy making AR barrels for M&P 15's as even with the encore new barrels are extremely hard to get and have been for awhile now.

AFIK the contender production ceased quite some time ago

Contenders are indeed in production and available from Eabco and other sources. My contenders are older guns. I think we'll have to wait a bit to get an accurate picture of current production quality.
