How much does where you live affect your threat level assessments?? I am what I would call ''higher density'' rural .. I have neighbors quite close by, as against miles away, but lot of open country around too... but my perceived threats are relatively modest .... tho I work on basis that about anything is possible... ''never assume''!!

Local town is quite small too so .. whilst plenty of punks around, as anywhere ... most crime is low grade such as vandalism etc. Plus .. lot of guns round here!! :p

I imagine that as density increases, so does threat level ... until if center city .. and apartment as against house ... perhaps then the levels climb dramatically.

Am I right? What are your views re where you live??

The larger the crowd, the easier it is to hide. As population centers increase in size, the sense of anonymity grows. So, as you move from rural on into very-large cities, threat levels grow.

However, even in large cities there are areas of lesser threat...

This may seem waaay out there, but I believe that the current coolness of the rap/gang culture means that urban/suburban/rural kids are equally likely to ape the thuggery they see in music/movies/TV.

Not that rural farm kids are doing drive bys, but at least in my area there's a lot more nusiance crimes like vandalism and car theft than there used to be, in my opinion their way of trying to be "bad" without being too "bad".

Just my .02!

Actual risk of attack higher in city.

Wait for help much, much, much longer in country.

Need guns both places.

Well I lived in a bedroom community, built a new home in a new platt, off the beaten path still only 3 min from the highway. Now talk about dark! About 12K pop very little crime ,response was pretty quick. Felt better when the streelights finally went up. We might have the city boys come down to raise cain, but usually run off pretty quick.

Now I'm in the big city, hiding in plain site one might say.Apt complex and 1 min from my "community" within the city. I go 30 sec in other direction...Well lets see all but one fast food joint has been hit in the last 8 days, 2 drug stores and a gas station. Some other going ons too. I figure the fast food joint a stone's throw is next. My problem is anywhere I go I can go from bad to worse in a heartbeat, just going to check on mom can be interesting.

Mom wanted to check out the new Kohl's store. Mom still wants to take the 'back way', me take the freeway, I like everyone going in the same direction and no stop lights. Ok we do it mom's way and I'm trying to convey if she has car trouble...aw heck...I pull over in a empty lot with gang signs and razor wire. " honey, show me the freeway route, this is not a real good place to be stuck huh?" " you are ... you know" "yeah mom I'm carrying"..."good".

I assume nothing, always carry, and figure no place is safe.

diabolical, nope.
I learned a reality many many years ago. 1) not everything makes the media for public awareness, and 2) There are always "groups" of persons working an angle. I'd use the term "gang" but that definition often gets one specific stereotype. As a "shorty folk" told me your bowling team, your Bridge club even a prayer group is a "gathering of persons engaging in like interests" hence "gang".

Another poster has shared a rash of break-ins in her area. In mine they are hitting the fast food joints, drug stores and gas stations. I actually expected this, the State Fair has/in in town gets persons needing money to attend, and visitors come to town.

Next time the Fair , a major ball game , a week of arts and crafts ...etc. , Check the stats and see if I'm right. See how much actually gets reported.

pop here just under 200K
