Has anyone purchased the 7.62x54 russian ammo at aimsurplus? I have been shooting the hungarian surplus for the last year of so and love it!!! How does this stuff compare?

The russian surplus i have seems to be some of the worst 7.62x54r surplus ive seen yet. Going by the Yugoslavian, Hungarian, Bulgarian, and Czech surplus that ive shot out of my M91/30. The Russian cases are not formed qute as unifromly and you will find the odd wrinkle around the neck. In my opinion it is overpriced. Buy the brass cased Bulgarian light or heavy ball, its a much better deal if your not into just having/collecting the other just because its Russian and WWII vintage. Also, remember that Russian surplus is brass/copper washed, still steel cased.

I'm hoping to get some hungarian ammo at the 2 big gun shows in my area at the end of Sept! I really dont want to pay $80/tin at aim

I passed on the Russian and got 4 cans of Hungarian this week. I'm just more comfortable shooting clean 70's production ammo than reclaimed post-war stuff. I also stocked up on 7 tins of Bulgarian heavy ball from AIM when they had it.
The price for the Hungarian was a bit steep (20 cents/round), but I figure that I have enough to tide me over for awhile until more of the good stuff gets back on the market.

I bought a case of Czech silver-tip light ball a while back. I'm not sure where I got it from but it's worked great for me so far. I would recommend picking some up if you find any.

I dont think I would buy any other type of surplus 7.62x54 other than hungarian. I've used Hungarian, Czech, Russian (1985), and Yugoslavian surplus. All worked well. Czech stuff did smell bad.
I have both light and heavy ball Hungarian still which I am sitting on.
Been shooting the Brown Bear 185gr fmj's of late. My Sako loves the stuff, my B-barrel does OK with it. Be advised that on last check the BB 185 stuff is loaded with a .310 bullet. Most surplus ammo loads .311 rounds. May or may not be an issue with your particular rifles.

I've been wondering how the Brown Bear 7.62x54R performed. I bought a case of Brown Bear 7.62x39 for my SKS and had tons of problems with it. But I hear ya on the bad smell with the Czech stuff.

Bummer bout the SKS not thinking BB is tasty.
My AK burps the stuff just as well as anything else it's ever been fed. Thing about the BB I like though is it seems a bit better in the accuracy department. Wolf shoots like poo out of the same rifle, but the BB shoots what one would call "acceptable groups" for a Kalashnikov. Also is cleaner than Woof in my experience. Don't plan on spending anymore cash on the x39 Woof.
Wolf 7.62x54r 148gr bi-metal, on the other hand, is two thumbs up. Very good gong plinking ammo for the M39 B.

Thanks for the tip...I'll have to pick up a few boxes and try it out. I've been thinking about the troubles I had with the BB 7.62x39. I was shooting 123gr SP and I think that the soft points were snagging on the bottom of the chamber lip or something. Anyway it jammed the gun up fierce. It must of happened 30-40 times in a case of 500. Plus I had a few fail to fire. Primers looked alright, but I don't know a whole lot about it.
I have not shot this Soviet surplus ammo, but I have tried some late '40s heavy ball Soviet surplus. It seemed ok, but I only shot about 10 rounds. I love collecting surplus ammo from various countries as well as shooting it. I would probably buy a tin of this just for collecting, if I had not bought that 91/59 today.

I haven't seen any reports on any of the milsurp boards yet about the "new" 40's Russian from AIM. In one of the threads a guy had just received some and it looked ok from the pictures - but he hadn't shot any yet.
However, for a little cheaper you can get the 300 round Bulgarian HB tins from Wideners for $45 + shipping which *is* good ammo.
