I am rather fond of the mn91/30 and the sks. of these two which would be best for dear hunting?

I've always thought the SKS would make a dandy little brush gun, maybe even as good as a short lever action. But if your shots are going to stretch much beyond 100yrds you're pushing the cartridge kinda hard.
The 91/30 is abit difficult to scope, and that safety is a bear to work with, but the cartridge will do everything an '06 will. But I can't imagine swinging one in the brush without the barrel hitting a tree.

Agree with what was already said. I have hunted with the SKS and I think it's a great brush gun. Not the longest range though.
Don't rule out the 38's or M44's. Much easier to manage then a 91 with almost the same power. I think they would be my choice over the 91.
If you take a good shot any of them will do the job.

The 91/30 with a decent barrel and rifling should work very well for moderate distance shots say out to 200 years or so. There are some scope mounts available and if you're lucky enough to find a sniper version, you won't have to do a lot of work to mount a scope.
I read over on the Mosin-Nagant forum that the 91/30 had a "default" battle zero of 200 yards and in cood condition, a 91/30 should be accirate out to 600 yards or so.
A lot of 91/30's have problems with the bolt sticking after firing because of the years of buildup of lacquer on the chamber walls from the military steel-case ammo that was coated with lacquer to protect against rusting. Once the old lacquer is removed from the chamber and the bolt operates smoothly, any necessary follow-up shot would be easy to get off.
Olympic and Winchester both have 180-grain soft-point ammo available in 7.62x54R and should work for deer.
The M38 or M44 should work for shorter distances or in brush country.

I dunno, I have a Yugo sks and she's an awfully long rifle. Not anythign like a short and handy levergun. But it's still a great gun. I dunno, i've always thought that my 39 finn would be a great deer gun. It's just so accurate, and then it's a lil' longer than the 38 or 44, but much shorter than the 91/30. Wolf makes 200 gr soft point for that sorta stuff. That stuff packs a punch let me tell you. I think it'd be ideal.

The Yugo SKS is a different animal. With all those gadgets on the muzzle it just doesn't handle like an SKS should.

I don't hunt(yet) but I know my 91/30 with mojo snap sights is accurate and easy to sight.

Won't your "dear" complain about you hunting her? Use the mn91/30 if it's accurate enough. The 7.62x54 is more powerful than the 7.62x39. Heavier bullet. Two to three inches at 100 yards will do.

I have gotten deer with both types of rifles. I have a scoped SKS that I got a deer with at 225 yards. Ordinarily I would not have taken a shot at that distance with a SKS but it was the last day of the season and the deer presented a nice profile.
The M91/30, the carbines M44, M38, and M91/59 as well as all the Finn Mosin Nagants make great hunting rifles. The 7.62x54 is very powerful and will take down any deer within the range of any modern high powered rifle. I always hunt with a milsurp (I try a different one each year) and will get a deer almost every year. With open sights I won't attempt a shot over 150 yards to ensure a clean kill.
