I worked on a couple of rifles last night. One was a stainless Remington 700, the other a brand new Marlin 1894 Cowboy. I put Wipe Out foam in both guns and left it in overnight. (I decided to go ahead and use Wipe Out on the new gun because the bore was dirty and I already had it out.) I had plugged the chamber with a cleaning patch so that the foam wouldn't get into the action, and I left the patches in overnight. This morning I pushed the patches out the muzzle. The one in the stainless Remmy was fine, but the one in the Marlin had a little bit of dried rust on it! There was a dark orange stain. I pride myself on never, ever letting rust develop on any of my guns, so I was upset -- especially on a new gun.
A couple of questions: Despite it's advertised claims to "never cause rust," does Wipe Out rust anyway, perhaps when in contact with a patch? Also, is there anything I can do to reverse the rust? I ran patches with Barnes and the bore seems pristine, but .... Thanks.
