What's the best way to remove gratuitous amounts of rust?? Couldn't care less about the bluing if that matters!
I've heard regular gun oil and 4ot steel wool.

Unless the gun in question is a total loss as guns go, Naval Jelly is NOT the right thing to use.

If the rust is deep & rust scale several layers deep?
Like you dug up on a civil war battlefield?
Yes!

If the rust is red surface rust that can be removed with a little elbow grease & 0000 steel wool & oil?
NO!!!!

Well, I didn't dig it up on a battle field no. But it was very neglected in a safe (not mine) and has a lot of red surface rust!
@ rcmodel are you saying negative on the steel wool and the naval jelly?

I am saying negative NO on the Naval Jelly.
Naval Jelly was invented for cleaning rusty battleships before you paint them again!

And a positive YES on the 0000 Super-Fine steel wool & oil.

If that doesn't work, then you could use Naval Jelly.
Just expect a frosted Grey/White etched finish on everything it touches, including your fingers.

Sweet! Ill probably go with the naval jelly because I am having it re blued, FOR FREE! Now is that a home depot product or internet?

You can buy Naval Jelly at any hardware or Home Improvement store worth being called one.

But you might want to ask the "Free Rebluing" guy what metal prep he prefers to start with, first.

After all, he is the one risking his $100 a bucket+Shipping+HazMat fee bluing salts for nothing.

I think Evaporust is easier on the base metal than Naval Jelly.
I have used it on some rusty magazines and it cleaned them right up although it takes a pretty good soak, like a couple of days. As with any rust remover, the blue is gone, too.

Well my last thread was about a colt detectives special 38 that's ate up with rust. I assume the re bluer can remove the rust I just like to do as much as I can!

Birchwood-Casey makes a rust remover that can be found in many gun shops and sites that sell guns stuff. I've used it. It'll remove rust AND bluing, and it's relatively cheap.

aluminum foil bonds to rust, when you rub it with a smooth piece. works great on bumpers. I removed the rust from a marlin 60 sitting in the backseat of a pickup truck with no rear windows. It looked like a boat anchor. Wrap the foil around a barrel and rub if up and down. The inside you have to stick with chemicals and wire brushes. Words great, hop this helps.

Forgot to mention, if your very careful, and use a VERY smooth piece, the aluminum foil method removes very little bluing.

W.E.G.: Quick dunk in "The Works" will give a finish that looks like a parkerized finish on some parts.

Sorry for the resurrection, but I'm intrigued...

Any more details as to process and end result? Do you need to rinse, card, and oil as with cold blue solutions?

I've got a project pistol I wouldn't mind trying this on.

Naval Jelly removes blue as well as rust.

"Blue Wonder" gun cleaner is supposed to remove light rust without harming the blue.

I've had good luck with Kroil. Spray or wipe on, sit a few minutes, wipe with cloth or paper towels. Use a little fine steel wool once the cloth stops removing rust effectively. Repeat until it looks pretty good, then Kroil it, let it sit overnight and do it again the next day. Seems to work better than regular gun oil.
