Removing Rust

Is KROIL and #3 steel wool a good way to remove rust (on the outside) of a gun. If this has been covered show me the link and i'll check it out.

Gentle rubbing with Kroil and 0000 steel wool works great. #3 is far too coarse and will scratch the bluing.

0000 Extra Fine steel wool only!!!!!
Any oil or solvent will work.
