A buddy of mine was telling me today that a guy that he works with has 2 ar-15's that he is thinking about selling. Evidently, this guy doesn't remember what brand they are, and he said one of them was a little rusted. My buddy told him that he thought ar-15's were made out of aluminum, and the guy said,"Well, this one isn't." Does anyone here know of an ar that has a steel reciever? I told my buddy that it sounds like the guy is full of fertilizer, but that I would ask you guys and see what you may know about this.

Thanks,
Matt

There are a few, rare examples of AR's with steel receivers. DPMS has a new stainless lower out, but they are expensive. I suspect that if he had one of these, he would have taken better care of it, and know what it was. Might be talking about something other than rust that might be cleaned off easy. Go look at it, tell him it's worthless and offer him $100 for it.

As I recall, the AR-10 (.308 / 7.62X51) has a steel receiver, at least the older ones. The aluminum receivers haven't traditionally held up to the extra abuse of the .308, if I remember correctly. But I have not heard of a steel receiver AR-15 aside from the new, expensive ones mentioned above.
