I am by no means a rifle guy. I like my CZ Pistols. But I've got a buddy in the office who has come across a Colt AR-15 Competition model with a coupla extra magazines. It apparently has had only a few boxes of rounds through it. He asked me what he might expect to pay for it (he doesn't know the year ala pre or post '94 ). I told him that the $1000 dollar range (or more) probably isn't all that unlikely for the going price - But I'd check with my buddies on-line to verify a typical price.

I will say that the AR-15 he came across is owned by an aquintance (of his) who needs quick cash. My buddy was also surprised at the $1000 figure - and I think he was already told what the price was. I also think it was MUCH lower that $1000.

Was I wrong? Is $1000 ballpark???

Thanks!

$1,000 is a lot for what is probably a POST BAN Colt sold under duress. They run about $800 brand new, IIRC. Naked muzzle.

If it is PRE BAN, has a flash hider, $1,000 is in the ball park. The older Colts marked "AR15" usually also have a bayonet lug. If in perfect shape it can go as high as $1,500 for preban COLT rifles.

If its a pre-ban, $1000 isn't out of line, yet. If its a post ban, $1000 is more than a few bucks high.

Got to find out exactly what model it is. Recent Colt target HBARs come equipped with stuff like plastic buffers, no chrome lining, blocked lowers, etc.

I am at work so do not have access to my files or rifles.
It depends on which rifle it is and you need to get the serial # prefix as that will tell you most everything you need to know.

If it is a colt match heavy it never ever came with a flash hider either when they came out in 84 or untill the ban.
I Will take a guess untill I get to my files that this much I know if it has prefix of two letters like mh with serial numbers its pre-ban and for the post bans they had cmh as a prefix.

Email me the prefix letters and any serial #'s and I can tell you the year ut was made and what it is and is suppossed to be. its not hard to look it up your self.

The regular heavy barrels and or competition models may of been changed I will have to look but like I said the colt match heavy never came with flash hiders.
A study was done before they became the rage and the army decided that there was nothing to be gained and in some test it showed the flash hider to not be as good. But I do not think it really makes a a difference myself.

Everything is a guess untill you know if its a pre-ban or not.

Brand new Colt Target Match Competetion MT 6700 sells for $975 around Philly, MT 6400C sells for $999 around Philly. These are both Post Ban rifles NIB.

Used versions of either typically sell for between $750 and $800 depending on condition.
