At home, posting on THR instead of working.
I was recently at the local gun club and a fellow member offered to sell me a brick of .22LR ammo. The asking price was $0.17/round and the ammo was from a german manufacturer called RWS. The brick was labelled "R100" and the seller claimed that it was high speed ammo that could cycle semi auto .22 rifles. He also claimed that it was "match grade".

Is this good ammo?

Is the price fair?

probaly not. $.17 approaches center fire prices. but .22s are extremely sensitive to what they shoot well.match is usually loaded for consistency, not speed. this rws may go through one hole, maybe not. but i bought some eley match that was all over the paper. federal shot the best, but it varied by lot. most all .22s cycles semis, except colobri and cb cap, etc. in short,i would say no.

Stuff seems pretty hard to find on the internet, best price I can find on it is $8.65/50 rounds, or 0.173 per round.

Product description:
High quality component cartridge for rifle shooting.
Supersonic velocity.
Low velocity deviation, round to round.
High accuracy.
Low wind sensitivity.
Ideal alternative for sensitive barrels.
Special condition manufacturing conditions.
Special selection of components.
Biathlon shooting discipline choice.

I don't know more than that, but most of my .22 shooting is closer to 2 cents a round or less

RWS is extremely high quality ammunition.
R100 is right up there with Eley and Lapua for winning matches.

R100 is not high speed and will probably not function your semi auto action.
It does not function semi auto in my Model 63 Winchester but shoots accurately.

The seller isn't making you any great deal, if it was being offered at, say, 10 cents a round I would buy it.

Onmilo:

Would it be safe to say that RWS R100 would be safe to shoot in a ISSF standard or rapid fire pistol like the feinwerkbau AW 93 or hammerli SP 20? I managed to secure 2 more bricks of R100 for real cheap recently and I would like to know where a steady 200rd/day diet of R100 will cause damage to match grade semi-auto pistols.

I agree with onmilo, however on price it is not too bad, and if you have never tried it, I would go for it. It is deff one of the finer 22 ammo's out there,
Also , if I remember right, it is a Dynamit nobel product, which is also one of the finest powder/primer makers out there...
As an aside, they proly make the finest airgun/ pellet products anywhere.

(After reviewing the Feinwerkbau AW93 manual and a manual for the older Hämmerli 280 (predecessor to the SP20), cannot find any reference to ammo ratings. The Hämmerli 160 does state to stay away from high velocity.)

RWS R100, although slightly faster than R50, is still within standard velocities (R100 is rated at ~1130 fps). IMO, the AW93 and SP20 should be more than capable of handling that ammo without any problems.

On a side note, R100 is going for 60%-80% higher than the original poster from a year ago. (Now in the $12.00-$15.00/box range and not everyone has put their price increases in yet. Champion's Choice is selling it for $25/box.) If you can find it for $8.50/box, you've got gold.
