Burglar shot, homeowner faces murder
Posted Thu, 27 Feb 2003

A murder docket was opened on Thursday after a homeowner in Umhlanga Rocks, north of Durban, allegedly shot and killed an intruder, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Inspector Michael Read said Pieter van der Merwe (32) told police he was asleep in his double-storey house in Ridge Road when he was awoken around 2am by a noise from downstairs.

He went to investigate with his gun in hand and found two men removing goods from the house.

Read said that Van der Merwe warned the men to stand still but they ignored him and attempted to run away.

Van der Merwe fired and one of the intruders, a 25-year-old man, was hit in the back and killed.

Read said the body was taken to the Phoenix mortuary while the second man was still at large.

Meanwhile, a 58-year-old man was shot dead by robbers in his Rietfontein home early on Thursday, Pretoria police reported.

Four armed men gained access to the house shortly before 2am, said police spokesperson Inspector Anton Breedt.

They confronted Lesley Forbes' 46-year-old wife in her room, and demanded money and jewellery. She acceded to their demand.

The intruders then went to Forbes' room, and his wife heard two shots, Breedt said. The men fled, and Forbes' wife found his body.

The wife has not been named.

Should tell you something about priorities of the authorities in SA.

Being cynical, the Dutch surnames give a strong clue to the ethnic and racial identity of the victims. Could it be the that the ethnic majority dominated govt. is trying to encourage whites to leave, like Zimbabwe, through selective prosecutions and lax policing?
