A good story coming from a sad, sad country.

A woman hit a robber where it hurts most - and then turned his own gun on him.

Sharon van der Merwe said on Wednesday she and her boyfriend could have been killed if she had not attacked him.

"It was self-defence," said 35-year-old Van der Merwe, who was held up with 45-year-old Gordon Joubert by gunmen on their plot in Muldersdrift, west of Johannesburg, on Tuesday.

The robbers tied up the couple, forced them into the shower and then loaded goods into their trailer and BMW.

Two of the robbers went to town to withdraw money from Joubert's bank account - but he had given them a false PIN - while the third continued to load the couple's belongings.

Van der Merwe said the couple decided to attack the remaining gunman.

She managed to untie herself and her partner, and they plotted their attack.

"He was in our bedroom packing our things when I called him and said: 'Baba, I need a cigarette'," Van der Merwe said.

"He emerged from the bedroom and took a cigarette from his pack. I then stood up and gave him a hard kick in his genitals."

She said the battle continued when Joubert and the robber fought for the gun.

"I then grabbed and pulled his genitals very hard, while Gordon tried to get control of his gun," Van der Merwe added.

"I attacked the robber so hard that I think he has no genitals left."

Van der Merwe said she then attacked the robber with an assortment of "weapons", such as a juice bottle, hair brush and clippers, until the three of them were in the kitchen.

"I opened a drawer and pulled out a breadknife and stabbed him several times in the face and body," Van der Merwe said.

Joubert, who was bitten on a hand and elbow during the fight, said he managed to grab the gun from the robber and threw it to Van der Merwe.

"I picked up his gun and fired three shots at the robber," she said.

"The bleeding man then turned in my direction, opened my fridge and took out a wine bottle to attack us. We fled from our house and called our neighbours for help."

Van der Merwe and Joubert were later treated by the neighbours - who happen to be paramedics - while the wounded robber disappeared into the bushes.

West Rand police spokesperson Superintendent Milica Bezuidenhout warned that confronting an armed attacker "could land you in even greater danger".

That last line is the kicker though,
What could be a greater danger than being at the mercy of 3 robbers with guns, angry that you gave them a false PIN number:confused: :fire: :banghead:

LOL, I love it. Or it could work great like it did in this instance.

Only thing wrong; they both weren't carrying before they were robbed and had to fight the guy for the gun.

in ZA they are stripping whites RKBA as fast as the possibly can.
Give em 5 years to be full on zimbabwe.

Don't these criminals know that guns are dangerous and be taken from them and used against them? They should just be passive and cooperate so that they don't get hurt.

One has to experience law enforcement in South Africa to actually understand how ludicrous that statement at the end of the article was.

If you would have called 999 (I think that is the new code) they would not have come until the morning. Police do not respond to emergencies.

I have had friends find dead bodies and the cops will state that they will be out in a day or two. I have also had friends suffer from armed robbery at their place of business. The response? Oh, we'll be out in a day or two.

Law enforcement was evicerated after power turnover. And yes, RKBA is being quickly reduced.

well, if there's a next time

I hope she's CERTAIN he doesn't have any left. That'll shorten that (genetic) thread, I'm sure.

When I lived there in the early 80's EVERYONE carried. I saw so many dead people as a result of others acting in defense it was surreal. Coming from such a tree hugging nation as New Zealand it was somewhat of a culture shock to say the least. In those days apartheid was still in full swing and life was errrr, unusual...

I say the US offers instant green cards to any south african who can show ownership of 10k or more in real assets. Maybe that would encourage them to leave before its too late.

Atek,

The problem is that the South African Government will only let you take R100,000 out of the country. And that is about $10,000 or so.

And that is not a whole hell of a lot to start a new life on.

Wasn't there the whole 'buying a boat and expensive artwork and sailing to freedom" method of escape?
why is it that socialist paradises always have to make barriers to exit?

I know a few South African families that got out by buying tons of gold coins, and then hiding them in chocolate-boxes. It can be done.

You know, when I first saw the post title I thought you had mixed up the A and the Z in Arizona, but then I saw "van der Merwe" and I went, "Oh, oh, Zuid Afrika" ;-).

ha, I never knew why south africa was "za" until now. i guess you learn a new thing every day. :)

See, you're learning more than just gun stuff here at THR--you're learning some Afrikaans/Dutch, heh.

When my family arrived to NYC fifteen years ago today, I don't think that we had even $2,000 for the three of us. In my opinion, getting out of a looneybinland is worth doing, no matter what temporary sacrifices may be required. South Africa sounds even nastier than the USSR was in 1989.

Your family was very brave, as was my father and mother.

It's a very tough call to leave what you know, for what you don't know. I am glad my parents made the call, but I am also hesitant to call out anyone that thinks it is too grave of a risk.

What actually happens is that the young are leaving in droves. It is much easier to leave at 25 then 55.

So the country is having a massive brain drain.

Aw crap, now the thread will be locked for sure.

South Africa is now run by the ANC, a communist party. I am shocked you can still have any kind of firearm. Won't be able to for long. First thing commies do is confiscate all the firearms. Happened in my country of origina. First the Nazis confiscated everything but "hunting arms", then the commies cleaned up when they took over.

Democr... er. commies would love to do that here in the US as well.
