I have an opportunity to pick up a very clean P - 14 in .303 British for $300. Rifle has been sportorize. Anyone out there own one of these rifles? How are they as shooters? If I buy the gun I may want to restore it to it's original wood.

I assume they would be as good as the .30-06 counterpart and the action to be stronger than the Lee Enfield.

Thoughts?

Does it still have it's ears on the rear sight? I think in original condition it would be a cool gun and not worry about how it shot.

I have an M1917 and it's a good .30-06 rifle, the action is the same on both. Mine has the ears ground off so would be both uneconomical and unethical to have ears welded back on and new wood put on it.

Thanks for the replies fellows. I'll let you know how I make out. Having a .303 British with a P-14 action should be a great combo. I'll posts pics if I get one.

If you do enough to it, you will have essentially a .303 version of the Remington M-30S, which was a fine rifle, based on modified P-17 parts.

One item that many miss is that, if you rely on iron sights, the .303 probably has all the power that you'll need. Winchester and Federal make good softpoint hunting ammo.

I suspect that a Search might turn up a photo of the Remington M-30S, which was a finer made rifle than the ones thay've made since the late 1940's.

Yea I will do a search. The Model 1917 arose from the P - 14. Basically the same gun chambered for the .30-06 cartridge. There is nothing wrong with the old .303 British. Probably taken more large game around the world than any other cartridge. Certainly more than adequate for anything on this continent.
