OOOOOOOOOOO-Klahoma!
Gentlemen,

My friend just picked up a beautiful Model 10. This particular specimen is blued at about 99%, with tell-tale signs of holster use once upon a time. The action cycles beautifully, and the cylinder locks up tight. She paid $300.00 for it, and I think she got a good deal. My questions are, what is the age of this handgun, and is it safe to run .38 +p through, with the serial number ACW76XX? She will be accompanying my wife and I with a party to the farm next weekend, and she wants to give it a proper welcome celebration. Any help is welcome. Thanks!

Sounds like a nice buy!

To Answer your Question. Yes! But to reanswer your Question with My Opinion! NO!

I feel this way! If you feel you need +P in a 38 you should just buy a .357!

I have had a mod 10 and have shot +P in it. But I do not see the need or inherit gain that is achieved by this +P business. I just plain dont like it!

As far as the date I do not have my books in front of me but you can find this info readily available at S&W website.

Hope that was helpful! And to say again I do not see the need. The model 10 with standard hollowpoints will get the job done. And for inside the home self defense I like wafers, they are thin led wafers stacked in the casing and are awesome.

The 3rd edition of Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson by Supica
& Nahas is not definitive to include the ACW prefix~? But, if I were forced
to make an educated guess, I would say that your S&W model 10-8 was
probably made between the fall of 1982, and the summer of 1983. Note:
This is just an approximate guess on my part; with the only way to be
sure is to send S&W historian Roy Jinks a request (with $30), and he will
research it for you; and send you a factory letter with all the pertient
details.

Sounds like a good deal, and I think Ala Dan has the date correct. +p is fine, as stated.

Another comment is to make it more hand friendly, try getting a Tyler T-grip adapter or old pachmayr one to fill in the grip arch and make a better grip shape (assuming it has the factory wood Magna grips on it). I like the look and feel of this more than rubber grips but those are popular, too.

I have three Mod 10s One a -5 and one a -9. The 10-5 (ser# D234XXX) was manufactured in 1981. The Mod 10-9 (ser# BDZ16XX) was manufactured in 1989. I would put your 10-8 closer to the 1985 or 6 date.

Yes you can (and I do) fire +P ammunition. I wouldn't use a steady diet in them, but for self defence and some practice would be no problem. I would, however, use standard .38 Specials for practice.

Thanks, guys! This gun is a beauty. It has Pachmyrs on it currently. She doesn't like the look of them, but has not yet had it to the range. I think she ought to shoot it prior to putting anything else on it. I would have bought it myself if the nitch was not already filled with my M&P...
