S&W 1006 - How Good Is It ?

I agree with Nightcrawler. My experience with the 10 is that it truely is the 357 of the semi-auto pistol world. It does slightly exceed the 357, but I doubt a game animal would feel the difference. The 10mm is not a 41 magnum. When pushed to its limits, and slightly beyond, it still falls a little short of 41 magnum territory, but ahead of the 357.

See I'm gonna have to be the turd in the pool and say that the .357mag is better as a woods round. I guess this deviates a bit from the topic but it does serve to put the 1006 into some perspective. BTW, I'm a HUGE fan of all 3rd gen. S&W autoloaders-truly the underspoken of the gun world.

-The .357 will always edge out the 10mm as a woods gun because of bullet selection as well as having slightly better sectional density. Has anyone seen or fired the 200 gr. Cor-bon. Real flat hard lead meplat which will reduce riccochet and give it more bite and thrust against hard bone targets. BTW, 1200 fps. That's nice and fast for a thin 200gr. bullet- it'll be the proverbial icepick for game animals.

-This is what I carry in the woods, in my ruger that is. I think the 10mm is the last word in combat autoloaders for single shot stopping ability, and it does do well as a woods gun, but the ruger gp100 holds the edge in the woods.

I think the 1006 is the best 10mm offered thus far, with a close second given to the glock. One offers more recoil absorbtion and durability outta the box, while the other offers more firepower with 15+1. The glock can be brought up to speed but that means money with a new barrel and spring.
The 1911 platforms offer excellent triggers usually. Live with the small compromises.

-1006 is a fantastic gun!:D

Heavy & Fast ...

Corbon's 200gn "penetrator" (@1200fps/639fpe) is a nice round for hunting or protection in the deep woods.

Don't forget, though, that Texas Ammo loads both of the 200gn 10mm Hornady bullets (XTP-HP & FMJ-FP) to 1250fps/694fpe.

Double Tap loads the 200gn XTP to 1250fps, and the 200gn FMJ-FP to 1270fps/715fpe. DT also offers a 220gn Poly-FP @ 1125fps/618fpe.

using the 4506-1 as a standard...

The 4506 is an over built gun for the round it fires. I am a Florida boy and the all stainless construction is priceless. That along with the magic that the 4506 brought to TV 15 years ago on MV.... just too sweet.

In any case the 1006 should be a great match with the high pressure 10mm round. The only problem I have with owning the 4506/1006 guns, is that very few holster makers still produce for these models. It seems that Galco should continually offer their sholder holsters for these guns.

Botton line is that the S&W 3rd gen of autoloaders are probably the most underrated products in the world of firearms to date. Every example I have owned has been a great performer and would not hesitate to own others in the future. So, if you have one you've got your eye on, GO GET IT!!!

God Bless!!!

Holsters ...

In case the Reverend or anyone else is interested, High Noon holsters makes a horizontal-carry type shoulder holster for the 5" 4506/1006 guns (this also fits the shorter 4566/1076/1066 guns).

Made in black, rather than tan, leather, I believe. But it should still go well with an Armani jacket, Wayfarers, and a silver drop-top Porsche. :D

Just FYI.

I've had my eye on that High Noon shoulder holster for the 1006 as well. May order one later on this year so I can do some winter carry with the 1006. With extra mags, thats 27 rounds of hot 10mm.

Gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling. :)

One of the reasons you don't see more holsters for the big S&W semi-auto's is that S&W kept altering the shapes of the frames and slides. The 645 was the first, the 4506 retained the basic shape of the 645 except for the grip portion of the frame. The 10mm had a thicker frame and slide and a rounded trigger guard, then the 4506-1 followed suit. This, coupled with the relative unpopularity of the big Smiths, has lead to a lack of holsters.
