Sent in my SW 1911 Sc "Commander-size". Problems were rough barrel crown and cases ejecting onto my forehead. I called SW and I received a prepaid UPS label in 4 days. I took it to a full service UPS customer center for shipping. Sent pistol in and received back via UPS, signature required, in less than 2 weeks. Not bad in my opinion. Barrel crown now looks great. Not sure what they did to the extractor or ejector as I did not take before photos. Attached is an after photo of the ejector so maybe someone can compare with theirs if they have a similiar problem. I'll take it out tomorrow to see if the ejection problem is cured. Bill

Do all the S&W 1911 have that big notch for the slide lock? Looks very strange to me to see the frame rail split like that!

LoSci = thanks for the comment on my back yard.

Wally - I have not seen other SW 1911's.I assume the cut through the rail and frame is standard.

Took it out yesterday - whatever SW did to fix the ejection into the forehead problem seems to have worked. Bill

The cut all the way thru the frame rails may be standard for S&W but its not for other 1911s. Not saying its bad, but it is different, up to now I'd thought only the external extractor on these were different.

Mandrake: I have heard many reports of ragged crowns. Mine was one of them. Most folks say it does not affect accuracy. Since I was sending it in anyway I asked them to recrown the barrel. Bill

ZBill, would you please post a picture of your "new" crown. Thanks.

IIRC, Colt started the full cut through the frame rail to act as a stress relief and inhibit stress fractures.

New crown

NVMM requested a picture of my recrowned barrel...here it is. Pixels still make it look a lillte rough, but that is a digital distortion. It was noticeably ragged before I sent it in. Sorry, no "before" pictures for comparison. Bill

Thanks ZBill. My crown looks bad but the gun shoots so well I'm afraid to touch it. Yours came out very nice. I might take that leap one day.

Colt started this as a result of their experiences with the Delta Elite 10mm 1911, and it's not uncommon to see this copied in other newer 1911-pattern production.

The way I heard the story, when Colt first chambered the 1911 in the snappier 10mm, they started getting complaints of frame cracking between the slide stop release port and the frame rail above it. Colt evidently determined two things about this; there wasn't any way to prevent the cracking from occuring, and that the cracking wasn't really an issue since it had no other long term effect upon the pistol's reliability or durability. So, to keep people from freaking out that their new high-dollar pistols were cracking, Colt simply milled out this area of the frame altogether to allow it to flex without visible signs of stress.

If you can't see the issue, it must not be an issue. :)

ZBill,

The gun and crown look great. Did they re-cut the crown at 90*, or is it angled inward?? Can't tell from the pic. Thanks.

NS

Nail Shooter: A close inspection shows 90 degree cut with a rounded edge finish on the outer portion of the end of the barrel. Bill
