If you don't mind it not looking original any S&W N-frame grip will work. The early gun's grip frames will be slightly longer (not by much) than the newer N grips.

If you look inside of the original stocks you may find a serial number - or part of it- penciled there. This is because when the revolver was made it was the practice to individually fit each frame with a set of grips. If the replacements are oversized they can be reduced to a perfect fit. If they are undersized they can't. No two 1917 frames are absolutely identical.

Seeing that nice nickel-plated 1917 reminded me....

I went into the police academy in '68, and I had several of those revolvers. You could pick them up at gun shows for about 50 bucks back then.
One was a little rough.
One of my fellow recruits wanted to buy it. He had a friend who was in the plating business, and he said he could plate the weapon and make it really spiffy.
So, I sold it...
About two weeks later the guy came in with the pistol. Turned out his "friend" was an automotive chrome-plater who had no experience with firearms at all. He merely removed the grips and dunked the entire weapon into the plating tank....
My buddy had a very pretty wall-hanger, quite solidly plated into a rigid and useless hunk of steel.

Railroadman, if you want the original type (smooth walnut) you will probably have to order another oversize set and this time work slowly and carefully to get them down to size. Better oversize than undersize, though.

I have bought from this outfit and their plastic grips are good, but a set of Victory Model grips were too small. You can try them if you want.
