Is the old chief's special close enough in size to fit in a kydex pocket holster designed for a j frame? Specifically a 642/442. I Googled up and couldn't find anything helpful. Thanks!

+1

The old Chiefs Special IS the J-Frame all the later ones are based on.

Only difference 'might' be the Chiefs Special was a .38 Special, and the more later .357 J-Frames probably have a longer cylinder & frame window.

Molded Kydex or leather might not fit exactly right, but it should still fit.

Careful on kydex, it's pretty abrasive. If you have a pretty gun it won't be pretty for long in kydex. If you have an old gun with "character" then go for it.

Thanks everyone! I've been using an uncle mike's fabric pocket holster but I miss the stability that my old kydex pocket holsters provided me; I've never owned one for a revolver though.

This one definitely has some character to it - though I was considering shipping it off to get reblued

G Code....

Both G Code and Blackhawk market polymer holsters for S&W J frames.
I like the SERPA CQC holster design. It's safe & you can adjust the holster cant, height, position. You can wear the rig strong side or cross-draw.
The G Code Kydex line comes in different colors & has different choices for the holder; paddle, belt loops, MOLLE, etc.

Blackhawk J frame SERPAs with or w/o the security feature are available in most retail places online.

Personally, I chose with a high quality leather pocket holster over the kydex versions. It is easier on the gun as well as the pants pockets.

Leather vs polymer/Kydex....

This could be a seperate topic but I've seen a few YT videos where the "gunners" and gun owners(some in the shooting sports industry) say Kydex holsters & gear are far better than tradional leather holsters, :uhoh: .

The +s & -s can be debated later.
It seems like both formats are the same $$$ wise.
