Hi all, I picked up an old model 39-2 at my local gun shop and was wondering what the consensus is. Should I carry this? I heard that the decocker on this model doesn't move the FP out of the way and was unreliable but that could be a bad rumor. Maybe newer models are safer???

As long as everything is working properly, it should be perfectly safe for carry. A model 39 in good shape should be able to hold its own against newer and more "modern" pistols.

Congratulations~!

The S&W model 39 and 39-2 were predecessor's to all the "wonder nines"
floating a'round. I own 2x, Smith & Wesson model 39-2's myself; and have
always been able to shoot to POA. Sometimes, I even break out one of the
grand ole' 39-2's for CCW use; as it makes for a good conversation piece~! ;)

The decocker blocks and locks the firing pin and works every time.

Holster, depends on how you want to carry. Most all the current 39XX/59XX series holsters will work. I usually use a pancake or belt slide type.

I carried one as a duty weapon for a while, excellent pistol, I'd like to have it back and would carry it without hesitation. Kept going back to the Hi Power though.

I checked out the decocker on mine and when engaged the FP pushes slightly IN (towards the primer). I've decocked at the range with no problems but this seems counter intuitive...

I have a 39 no dash. It shoots fine but I do have trouble with the decocker, it doesn't always drop the hammer. I took it apart and didn't find anything obviously wrong with the gun. I will not carry this until I get it checked and works 100%.

The only thing new guns have that the 39-2 does not are firing pin-blocking drop safeties. To get this capability on your pistol you would have to carry with the safety (which does block the hammer from the firing pin) engaged. However, it would take a pretty unlikely chain of events to drop the gun from a sufficient height and land directly on its muzzle for it to discharge. As long as the pistol is reliable with hollowpoint ammunition (something I feel is necessary for the 9mm), carry it with confidence. :)
