I own a S&W Sigma .40ve and I was wondering if I should have some work done to it to lighten the trigger and maybe have some other work done to it as well, I like the gun and it shoots fine, not as well as my 1911 but still its a great sidearm, but my question is should I just save my coin or should I put money into a gun that others say isnt worth the time/money?

If you're going to keep the gun forever then by all means, go for it. However, I feel that will not be the case, and you'll eventually move on to something better. Any money you put into a Sigma should be considered "over improvement", and will not be worth it in the long run. I had one for a short while, but soon realized there were much better guns out there for not much more money. But as the saying goes, to each his own.

Good luck...RUT

Yeah i felt the same exact way just needed a second opinion, thank my friend in helping me to clear up that issue, its an Ok kinda gun but i still love my o'l faithfull 1911 :-D things a dang nail driver :)

Absolutely nothing wrong with your Sigma, but NO amount of work by ANY gunsmith is gonna' make it run like your 1911. You're running the S&W value-priced model against the most popular tactical handgun over the last 100 years. Agree with ^. I had to LEARN this money lesson without the advantage good advice from friends on this forum - "You can put a diamond in a goat's butt, but it's still a goat's butt".

It's still a goats butt if your glass is half empty. Being a glass half full kind of guy, I say its still a diamond. Sigma is a budget gun no doubt about it. However, its still a quality firearm in regards to durability and functionality. I say get a trigger job. It should improve accuracy but not resale value. I assume the gun was bought with the intentions of it being used as tool and not as an investment.

yes sir pappa bear, you are very right, i only purchase weapons with the intent of keeping everything i buy, i never resale unless its still in the family so i can still shoot it, and yeah i was also thinking of getting a trigger job for it just because 9 pounds is kind of a stupid amount of weight to put on a trigger no matter who makes it.

And damn do i love that diamond quote hahahahaha ROFL.

Most of the improvements for the Sigma are relatively cheap to do (I wouldn't pay a smith to do it though). I'd say have at it. I try to be relatively tame on modifications I do (and trust me, if you ever think "I'll just grab the Dremel . . ." stop, and back away slowly :)), but I have no issues tweaking a few things on my guns to make them better.

Take the money you were going to put into the Sigma, add it to the money you can get for selling it and buy an M&P. Never look back.
I lean a bit more in that direction, but if you're anything like me (dang, I wouldn't wish that on ANYBODY!) as soon as I got the M&P, I be thinking about a...TRIGGER JOB! I know, I know, it's a sickness.:D

I wouldn't spend money. I'd do it myself. That's what cheap guns are good for.

And as cheap as they are, Sigma's sure are purdy. I wouldn't adding one to my collection. It's like a "truck gun" that's too nice for the truck. I think they look better than my Glocks.

hahahaha totally agree with all of you, and i have been wanting to go to college for gunsmithing for my 3rd degree sometime in the future, but as far as selling it to get basically the same gun is out of the question, the mp model doesnt have enough improvements to warrant a purchase when i already have a value model than can be transformed into one for less money by myself than for the asking price of said gun, thanks for all the help though fellas, really appreciate all the help, and yeah its basically a hunting/truck sidearm.

its basically a hunting/truck sidearm
That's why I bought my first GLOCK. I couldn't bear the thought of someone stealing my old Toyota Pickup & later finding my custom Browning Hi-Power in the door pocket! Heck, I can REPLACE the truck.

LOL exactly! my 1911 is my baby, i would never keep that in the truck at all lol, to much time/money has gone into it :p

I wouldn't do anything to it that isn't beneficial, e.g., smoothing the trigger and maybe some night sights. For that matter, you can get by with just a front night sight. Cosmetic embellishments for this gun (and Glocks) seem a waste, like putting makeup on a pig. ;)

yeah my intent was just to lighten the trigger only, all my big money changes go to my 1911, and my vast amount of rifles and dogs LOL, sir the sigma is made in two models, the m&p and the VE or value addition, so yes I read the public information about said lawsuit as well, but that has no bearing to what I was inquiring about, and as far as wasting money on "ups" for this gun is out of the question.

sir the sigma is made in two models, the m&p and the VE or value addition

You're a little off on that. The M&P is a completely different design from the Sigma - its not a sub-model. They are similar only in that they're polymer, striker fired, and both have the S&W logo on the side.

They also have the SD series which is more or less a separate design too. It leans a bit towards the Sigma in layout, with some M&P-ish features thrown in.

It's just a guess on my part, but I think that the SD series is S&W's replacement for the Sigma. They're likely burning through existing stocks of parts and the like before retiring it from production (that's not to say that its not a good gun or anything - just what I feel like they're doing from a manufacturing standpoint).

I wasn't being technical, I was being general, if I need to be technical for you folks then I can happily ablige, I wasn't wanting to speak of internals on this model or other similar ones, and whether it be a M&P or and SD or VE, they are all built off the same platform is what I meant by my above statement. Either way thank you all for the information provided.

call S&W customer srvc

tell them the trigger's "rough and gritty"

DO NOT tell them it's "stiff"

they'll email prepaid postage

about a month later it'll show back up

smooth as butter, night and day difference in the trigger

lifetime warranty + no charge

I love the sound of no charge, that has a sexy ring to it :-D I may do that, thanks for that information bud.
