Do any of you CCW/shoot an SD9/40 on a regular basis? If so, what are your opinions on the gun? I know S&W has 'discontinued' it....sorta...having 'resurrected' it in the form of the SD9/40VE, minus the Melonite coating and the Tritium front sight (IIRC, the sights are plastic, now).

Sights are indeed plastic. Basically, they took the SD series and removed all the things that made it more expensive to sell than the Sigma series. The result is a new series for the price of the Sigma but using the incrementally better design of the SD.

Can't say much more than that though as my exposure to it has just been research. I have shot a Sigma and own an M&P but still have no actual trigger time on the SD. I will say that I intend to buy one of the new SD VE's soon though.

I got a SD9 a couple of months ago when they first announced they were discontinuing it. I love it. Paid $369 for it new and think it was a heck of a good deal. I don't have a lot of range time with it. Maybe 300 rounds but it has been flawless. Very accurate. Nice trigger and has night sights. The sights on mine say M&P on them so maybe they are the same ones on the M&P. Very concealable for a full size gun.

Noticed the "new" ones are listed for $399 locally. Can't see an advantage over the SD9 other than the stainless slide

I have no first hand experience with it either, but the knocks against the Sigma have always been the bad trigger and a proprietary rail. The original SD addressed both of those issues. The new model carries on both of those improvements and lowers the price. Seems like a good deal to me.

I wonder if it is just my area or because it is a new gun, but locally the new ones seem to be priced about $30 more than the SDs

Probably your area. The new ones are $329 shipped from Buds right now and I've seen them go down as low as $309 shipped there at least once. That's basically just an improved gun at the same price as the Sigma.

Great pistols, got one of the sd9's and I'm tempted to buy one in 40 before I can't find the original melonite guns anymore. I may buy the ve model and put a set of night sights on the gun. My gun has 1500 rounds of non stop action and the trigger has smoothed out nicely. Super gun for the money, a real sleeper. Smith warranties their guns as long as the company stays in business. Any problems and they fix it free and ship to and from. I just returned a Glock 23 to the factory for issues and shipping from fed ex cost me $74.00 one way, which is absolutely nuts. I'm a Glock guy but I have to tell you the sd models are fine pistols.

I removed the pigtail (torsion) spring on my Sigma 9mm. Improved the trigger quite a bit and 900 rounds so far without a hiccup. It's probably in the same league with the SDVEs as to the trigger pull.

I have to say that S&W Sigma & SD series pistols are very underated
they exceptionally reliable and for the price with a lifetime warranty you can't beat them. If a gun shoots excellent and is totally reliable how can you ask for more. For the price they are a steal. Most people can't shake the sigma stigma and think there junk. They are not junk just another polymer pistol. Polymer pistols cost much less to build which is passed on to the customer, whats wrong with that. Some companies charge a whole lot for their gun because ther made in germany and have the polygonal rifling. It is still a polymer gun. They just make more money. I can't remember but I was told that Glocks cost like under 50.00 bucks to make. The SD series trigger is about 8 lbs and feels just like a NY1 Glock trigger and many police departments carry NY1 triggers not the 5 lb ones. NYPD uses glock 2 trigger at 12 lbs same as the sigma for duty. The sigma is cheaper to purchase than my sd series, I paid about 439.00 for my gun but sigmas can be had for 300.00. That's a steal and they shoot very well. Most people who own them don't compain.
