I just purchased a NIB Smith & Wesson 4506 that was originally bought to be a sherriff dept. service pistol and the local sherriff dept changed weapons and went to another pistol and I ended up purchasing this pistol that is like at least 14 years old anyhow the sherriff deputies refer to this pistol as the boat ancher and it is pretty hefty and I have yet to take it out to fire it but was wondering if these are accurate shooting pistols and if they shoot well.

3rd gen smiths are some of the finest guns ever made. They shoot well and are fairly accurate. Enjoy your find.

Hefty indeed. A 4506 is what I qualified with at the police academy back in the '90s. Never owned one, but would if the opportunity arose.

Much to my surprise, when I finally got a chance to shoot a 4506, I really liked it!

It's obsolescent as a heavy, single-stack, bulky gun with relatively low capacity. Somewhat like a larger, bulkier 1911 with a safety that works backwards.

But as a range plinker or something for PPC type competition, it really is quite nice!

That is not a safety, it is a decocker. Flip it down to decock and back up for carry. Safety not needed on a TDA. I traded a Gold Cup for a 645 in the 80's and the 645 was more accurate than God Cup. I still have a 4506 and a 4516, IMHO the most reliable 45's ever built.

When I bring my 645 to local IDPA shoots, it gets more comments like "I wish I never sold mine" "Do you know where I can find one" "They even feed empties" and even "When did they start making these?"
My only complaint is that a holster is really tough to find for the "Tank" as I call it. But, I get by with begging my way to using the old Ernie Hill speed holster rig with 5 mag carriers from the IPSC days.

Thanks for this thread, guys. It served as a reminder that I've neglected to get my 645 out for a while. We had an IDPA shoot tonight with main gun and back-up and the old girl did herself proud again. Definitely a Tank...but boy, does that gun stay ever stay on target!!!

OH YA,great pistol you have there.I am a big fan of 3rd gen. smiths.5906,CS9,3914,3913 models.I am starting my second round with M&P pro models,shield,9c and full size model.;)
