Oddly, I've tried running what are nominally 'full charge' wadcutters in my 52, and they won't reliably cycle.

Guess I should quit citing the good Major.
Oh, well, we see plenty of people posting that they consider regular midrange wadcutters adequate for self defense.
Wonder if it will shoot 5+1. My PPC friend modified his magazines to hold six for those matches, so it probably would.

I’m going to try a Stumpy .38 Short Special load! why not… just to see if it would run. Mags are $200! so I’m not modifying anything, besides my modification skill is as good as a hamster on Labor Day!

Similar to when Jeff Cooper likened the availability of 1911s during the busy days of Viet Nam to millinery in an earlier war:
"Where DO you Ladies get your French fashion hats?"
"My dear, we don't GET our hats, we HAVE our hats."

Fred doesn't have to GET M52 magazines at current extortionate prices, he has had his M52 magazines for years.
His first six shot alteration was done for $20 by Clark, he copied the cut for the rest.

I don't know if Clark is still making the modification. At present prices, I would not be inclined to experiment.

LOL! Can't explain why mine won't run on the full charge WCs; voice in the back of my head says a friend's will. In any case, a 52 for defense seems a stretch...surely, if a guy could afford a target wadcutter gun, an old .38 revolver should have been within reach. I think Nonte was messing with us; wonder if he had any thoughts on racing at LeMans on a Farmall?.
In a snub, full charge WCs do make a decent defense load, IMHO.
