I need some help please.

I have three 5904s, all bought used, so I thought having a spare barrel would be smart. I bought one from Midway that says it's for 5904/5906/5943/5946/Super9, 9mm 4"SS. It's Midway item #992152, S&W #276210000.

I apologize for the poor iphone photo, but I believe you can see that the new one on the right has a much wider hood or "tang" on top at the back than the old one on the left. All three of my 5904s have barrels that look like the one on the left.

Did I buy the wrong "era" of barrel, or is milling-to-fit normally required?

Thanks in advance.

It would seem so. My rounded trigger guard 5906 has the wider hood.

My question is, though, why? It's pretty darn unlikely you'll ever wear out a 9mm barrel, especailly a S&W 3rd gen.

All three of my 5904s are rounded trigger guard, all three manufactured in 1991/1992, and have the narrow hood.

As to "why"... I did buy (and subsequently trade away) one police-trade 3913 that had a shot-out barrel, so it can be done, and one of my 5904s still shoots fine, but the rifling looks a little funky, so I thought it would be prudent, as these 5904s are still my favorite carry-autos, and I shoot them a lot.

My 5906 square trigger guard has the narrow hood. You should head over to the S&W forum for answers or post something in the gunsmithing section.
Your thought about milling sounded logical untill I saw the 2 side x side. That's a lot of fitting right there.
