Just bumped into a S&W 60-10 J frame .357 at a pawn shop (yes on Jan. 1st.)

No trigger lock but with mim parts. Stainless and in decent shape but needs cleaning bad.

They want $500 plus tax.

Good deal?

Thanks,

Quick check on Gunbroker finds quite a few Model 60s (in .357 with a 3" barrel), priced north of $600 so $500 doesn't seem to be that much out of line for an asking price. If the gun checks out okay mechanically maybe see if they'll go $400 or $425 due to the somewhat neglected appearance of the gun. Never hurts to ask.

True!

May try that.

A M60 3" 357 is about the only smith left that I want but don't have. I need it like another lock-hole in a gun, I've already got a 2.5" M19 that covers much of the same ground. I still want it though!

Seems like great pistols to me.

I value the adjustable sights on my 60-10 over the Ruger SP101. Of course, it shoots better for me too. I found the target results remarkable. I shoot customized short barrel class loads in it just like the other similar guns. To me, shooting full power 357 in a smaller gun is crazy. I don't want to go so far as to shoot 38 Special in them though. Then I have the wrong gun IMO. That could be different if I had fewer choices.

Apparently something internally has changed in the Mod 60 line beside caliber.

The Sky Marshals had them in the 70s and shot +P+ in them and they were out of time around 500 rounds. Out of time is defined when the trigger is pulled double action the cylinder has not been locked into place prior to hammer fall.

Does the Ruger SP101 3" shoot point of aim point of impact? I was thinking about one of those as I know they hold up very well and stay in time a long time.

I have a Ruger Speed Six 2 3/4" that shoots high left. In other words to hit center on a silhouette target at 25 yards I have to aim a foot low at edge of silhouette.(about 9" right).

My GP100s 3" shoot point of aim point of impact at 25 yards and they are fixed sight.

Insofar as a short barrel load in 357 I have a 222 gr bullet mold and load them in 357 with 2400 but can't recall the load right now. Out of a 6" barrel the chrono has them at 1100 fps and the recoil is not nearly as severe as the 357 Mag 125 grain loads.

I am figuring from a 3" barrel it would fly a little over 800 fps. Per Col Fackler of the Army Wound Ballistics Lab 800 fps is ideal for bullets at 200 gr or heavier.

Two years ago I paid more than that for my 60-9 2". I would think that the 3' would be a premium.

My 60 is my daily carry , and a pleasure to shoot. (I stick primarily with .38 special , carry with +P...)

Go for it.
