I have been experimenting with different brands of cheap 22 LR ammo for the best accuracy. I'm finding that the cheep ammo isn't very consistent for accuracy. Now I'm moving on to the regular priced loads. I have read that the Winchester 22LR power points perform well for accuracy in the 617's. Looking for some of your results with your S&W 617 favorite diet. Thanks guys. Capt.

I don't currently own a 617, but my model 17 shoots very well with the Winchester Super-X 40 grain round nose high velocity ammo.

Actually, I've had good luck with the same ammo in all my .22s.

Good Luck...

Thanks Joe, I'll start my next round of load testing with the Super X. It's a dirty job,but someone has to do it. Hansom 17 Joe. Blue/black always looks good and clrean. :D

Both my 1951 K-22 and much newer model 617 get CCI standard velocity. The K-22 delivers better accuracy with it, of course. I'm sure they'd both shoot more or less anything, but since I buy standard velocity by the case, that's what they get.

Mine seems to really like the CCI Silhouette high-vels, which are basically just their min-mags manufactured to better specs (or so I was told).

Range testing on Sunday. Winchester wild cats performed better ( group size, they all go bang)then CCI Blazers and Remington Thunderbolts. The CCI mini-mags closed up the group size immediately. I'm going to try some CCI standard velocity next and some Winchester power points. Any more suggestions?

Winchester power points have shot the smallest groups to date. Not only in my 617,but also in my shooting buddies 617. They seam to like them.

K-22's are mighty impressive guns. I just shot a .98" 25-yard group with my M17 using Federal Bulk Pack. I'd bet it will shoot better with better ammo, but I'd also bet that I can't hold it that still.

The least expensive reliable 22 ammo I have found are either Aguilla SE or the Federal Bulk Pack 525 rounds of copper plated hollow points.

They do shoot better than we do, don't they......

But have fun testing!

Winchester Super X, Winchester T-22, CCI Mini Mag, Standard Velocity, or Pistol Match should all do well in your revolver.

As one writer has said, "garbage in, garbage out."

The best cheap ammo in my K-22 is Federal bulk pack. What it really likes is CCI Green Tag Competition Ammo.(Not cheap)

Favorite Diet for 617?

If you can find a brick of the Federal Lightnings give them a try... They are an inexpensive type but they are real house a fire shooters for me. They are almost like match bullets in most of my 22's. Most of my rifles like them to.. :)

I have the 6 shot, 6" model 617 that I use for Bullseye shooting, and to date I've found the CCI standard velocity to be the most accurate.
I've tried several offerings from Remington, Federal, CCI, and Winchester, and out of all the different brands and types I've tried, I would rate them as follows for this gun.....
#1 - CCI Standard Velocity
#2 - Winchester T-22
#3 - CCI Green Tag

I've also used the CCI Blaser for practice, and have had good results with it...(considering it's cheap bulk ammo)
