Date specific Smith & Wesson Mod. 624 recall info I just received. I had not seen this date range posted before so hope it's not old news.

Mike,

The recall only affected a small number of firearms shipped between January 1, 1985 and June 8, 1985.

Your gun was produced and shipped on / after June 25, 1985.

You are all set.

Regards, Paul

I have a M624 that was involved in the recall. The dealer sent it back to S&W well before I got my grubby hands on it.

I called S&W and asked them why the M624's were recalled. They told me that some cylinders were made from the wrong grade of stainless. I did not get the specifics, whether the stainless steel from the steel vendor was made to the wrong specification, of whether someone picked up the wrong steel billets out of inventory and got them into manufacturing.

I suspect that someone did not properly segregate the proper billets of steel. I know that Springfield Armory specifically asked their vendors to supply steel in different cross sections. They had found that round bar stock pretty much looks all alike. So they had steel delivered in square sections, rectangles, etc. Anyone down stream of inventory would recognize the wrong shape of steel.

I was told by S&W that they were able to tell the difference between “good” cylinders and “bad” cylinders by magnetic inspection.

My revolver came in a box with a red circle stamped on the end. That was the S&W inspection mark indicating that my M624 was inspected and found to be good.

I have never heard of any M624’s having problems in service. I believe that all M624’s with defective cylinders were identified, and good cylinders put in.
