I got to shoot a friends 625 the other day and loved it!

Are all 625's chambered for 45 LC and 45 ACP?
Are they all stainless?
Is there a standard barrel lenght?

What will a used one run me?

I don't have a DA wheel gun right now and this might just be the Gun!

I would love a 625 in stainless, in 45 LC/45 acp w/ a 4" barrel!

Thanks guys!

All 625s, by definition, are .45 caliber. Some have been in .45 Colt, the majoriy in .45ACP.

The two are not interchangable. The ACP version has a shorter cylinder.

The ACP version also requires moonclips, or rimmed .45 Auto Rim ammunition.

The only ones in production right now are the .45ACP models. They're available with 4" and 5" barrels. I have the 5" model, and love it. It balances perfectly.

I'll second Nightcrawler's comments. I've had the 625-2 five inch .45 ACP since it came out in 88 and it is a tack driver.

I was at the range today and a fellow let me shoot a cylinder full in his 625. It was awesome! I would love to have one.

Souris,

I have owned a Smith 625 (with a five-inch barrel) for several years, and it is an absolute delight to own and to shoot. Extremely accurate and easy to shoot. And when coupled with RIMZ Moon clips, quick and easy to load. I do not believe that you will go wrong by adding this revolver to your collection. And in .45 acp, you get all the power you need in a big-bore shooter, as a practical matter, with the added benefit of readily-available and inexpensive ammo.

While you are at it, though, take a look at the scandium version of the weapon...the 325. At approximately 24 ounces, I believe, it is both nice and easy to shoot and a dream to carry. As much as I like the 625, I frankly prefer the lighter version even more.

If you get one, let us know what you think.

All 625s are stainless .45 caliber large-frame (i.e., "N-frame") revolvers. As said above, most are .45 ACP and some are .45 Colt.

I have long thought that the moon-clipped .45 ACP Model 625 in either 4" or 5" barrel is among Smith & Wesson's most desirable revolvers. Great for IDPA, great big-bore defense revolver, cheap ammo, quick reloads, shootable and fun. I'd be amazed if you regretted such a purchase.

More generally, the current stainless S&W N-frames seem to display very good fit and finish. My new 629-6 (stainless 4" .44 Mag) is superb. I thought some about getting a 625 instead, but ended up going with the 629 for the versatility of being able to use both .44 Special and .44 Magnum, and couldn't be happier.

The 625 is going to happen someday, though.

I've had my 625 5" for a little less than a year. It is the best finished, tightest revolver I've ever used. Accurate? Boy, is it! I did replace the stock hammer spring with a lighter one (Wilson Combat), and also a slightly lighter trigger rebound spring. Buy it- you'll like it!

With Smith and Wesson's arcane, mysterious numbering system
Actually (with very few exceptions) S&W's numbering system was quite logical until 2005. Sure it had changed and grown to meet the expanded product line but it was still a very sensible and logical system.

But with the advent of the new 619 and 620 models they have screwed the pooch. :barf:

According to the old system the 619 should have been a stainless K-frame, adjustable sight, .357 magnum (in other words the Model 66) and the 620 should have been a stainless, fixed sight, N-frame .357 magnum. :scrutiny:

Yep. It was formerly complicated but logical; but the 619/620 busted the rules, as BluesBear said. The 619 should have been named the 613 and the 620 should have been named the 619.

I ask: What would have been wrong with a 613?

If you like the caliber, the 625 or the Model 25 are excellent. I was looking at the 2005 S&W catalog and they list a Model 625JM which is suspect is quite a nice little 4" revolver. It is so nice, that I'm just going to have to look at one in the flesh. Smith also makes a Airlite Model 325PD in 45ACP, and as well as a 4" and 5" 625. Somebody must like 'em!

I've owned a couple of 625's over
the last few years. One thing they
had in common was they were all
very accurate with most any ammo.
In fact my 45acp mountain gun
was very accurate with wolf ammo.
My favorite is my 3" 625-7 in
45 colt.

Man shooting Wolf through a 625, that is an insult to a fine gun! :scrutiny:
The 625 is the epitomy of revolvers, balances just right. Accuracy is beyond words! And, the action can be slicked up so it is down right sweet!
For range use, the Rimz poly full moon clips can not be beat! For anti-social purposes a fellow shooter should only use the metal full moon clips! I have tried the JM wood grips, and well for me the Hogue fits my hand just right, enjoy your gun!

The 625's are not just different in their cylinders. The .45 ACP variants have a long forcing cone to cover the gap to the shorted cylinder, as compared to the .45 Colt version. The .45 Colt 'Mountain Gun', still available at least via Davidson's in the blued 25 model, is a fine gun - but, dishing out the back of the cylinder for moonclipped ACP's and AR's may make .45 Colt usage difficult, as the step is too deep. I experimentally proved this one day while cleaning my cylinder... a .454 Casull would fit - disaster!

S&W introduced the 4" 625JM version new this year. At only $27 more than the MSRP of the 4"/5" standard 625's, it is a true bargain. It comes with the Jerry Miculek wood stocks, gold bead interchangeable Patridge front sight, and hard-chromed grooved trigger and hammer. I love mine... and I normally detest full lugs. I sold my prior boringly accurate 4" 625 in .45ACP because I didn't like it's looks. I missed it - and 'lucked' into the 625JM early last Feb - thankfully, as I really missed that frugal big-bore. Besides, I don't see that full-lug when I am shooting it!

Yes - get a 625 in .45 ACP - and a bunch of moonclips - and the nutdriver-style de-mooner. Try some .45 Auto Rims - Georgia Arms loads them in new brass with 200gr JHP and 230gr LRN - great little rounds. Super, if you reload... get some of the new Starline AR brass, it's nice. Also, the HKS #25 speedloader has wide tynes designed to grab the thick-rimmed AR's, although loading is more of a 'Bomb's away!' carpet bombing action than guided- those cases are short. Still, it is faster than singly.

Buy a new one - ~$600-$650. Yes, it is steep - but, you'll have that lifetime door-door warranty. Great revolver.

The 625 Performance Center model (4") is the best gun in my collection, hands down. If this makes sense to anyone, I like it so much, that I hardly shoot it. I want to keep it nice. My favorite pistol, by far.

625s are stainless, 25s are blued. All 25s and 625s are in .45 -- most, as others have said, in .45 ACP. They are available in barrel lengths from 4" to 6".

I checked Davidson's - they have 18 of the 25MG in .45 Colt - at $626.99 (New!) - with a ~10% profit figured in for the ffl dealer... YMMV. Of course, my local pusher had one on the shelf for less earlier in the year. The new 625JM is currently there for a few dollars less.
