My LGS has an ANIB model 639 on hold for me and I have to admit to not being overly familiar with this particular model. I'm sure there are plenty of board members with personal experience. Are there any issues or idiosyncrasies associated with this particular Smith? Thanks in advance.

The only downside is S&W will no longer do warranty repairs.
Fixed or adjustable sights? The adjustable rear sight is pretty ugly to my eye.

Bush Pilot, I bought a new adjustable sighted 639 soon after they were introduced. It was a robust and totally reliable pistol. I undoubtedly sold or traded it at some point on some long forgotten whatever. The occasional 639 I see listed for sale is usually well worn, at a price higher than I've been willing to pay considering condition. I have nothing negative to report about the pistols themselves though. I will mention that the earlier "round trigger guard" versions tend to bring more money.

I can't think of any downside with these pistols except for the slide mounted safety location. Double action trigger on most of the S&W autos I had seemed long but fairly smooth. Sights were easy to acquire and accuracy was pretty decent. A good, reliable, and durable 9mm. service pistol.

Fantastic gun! I have two 39s and wish I could find a 639. Magazines are a little scarce- the later ones with the plastic followers feed better. The trigger takes a bit of getting used to- lots of clicks and stages before it breaks. Overall though, some of my favorite guns.
