Hi all,

I am considering a trade for the gun in the attached photo. It's a S&w model 64-3 that has had it's hammer bobbed. What does a mod like that do to the value of a gun? Any expert advice for this situation?

Thanks,

Is that a 3" barrel? Interesting. Some guys really like the 3"s.

If it was a 4" barrel, we could pin down the cost very well, as CDNN and J&G and such places have a lot of those for sale at extremely good value prices -- between $250 and $300. Security company trade-ins. They pretty much all have bobbed hammers, and some may be truely converted to DAO.

A 3" gun should bring a bit more, I think, just because they're a little less common.

If the trade value was somewhere around $300, I'd be jumping on that.

It could very well be a factory bobbed hammer, I have one myself and it's an excellent shooter...

Is the factory bobbed hammer DAO or might it also still be able to fire SA?

If someone just ground off of the hammer spur and didn't eliminate the single action cocking notch, yes. If it came from the factory as a DAO option, it probably lacks the provision to be cocked and fired.

As said the 3" barrel is quite desireable.

Also those are Smith and Wesson RB Combat Grips - worth between $150 and $200 just by themselves.

The hammer is not a big deal as many were factory done by S&W for various contracts.

My LGS had a number of 4" 64's 2yrs ago in well used shape and they sold out very quickly a $260....

That one looks alot nicer. I'd say it's a $350-$400 gun easily without the grips.

So maybe the NIB 66-2 with these grips (not the matching box) wasn't a bad deal at $700. I figured the grips at $100....$150-200? Really?

Maybe the guy will have it at the next local show with the matching box.

There are bobbed hammers and there are DAO revolvers. The two have nothing to do with each other. This seems to confuse many people.

When CHL first started in Texas I got a S&W 640 Centennial in .38 as I was paranoid someone would sport what I was carrying. I still have that gun!

Eventually I realised no one notices unless you are real blant on printing so I upgraded to a S&W 64 2 inch snub that I had the hammer bobbed off and red insert in the front sight.

Yes the 64 on the right above was my second gun and the Speed Six was what I used to make expert in IDPA while back. I did an action job on both guns and they still have mighty slick DA pulls as well as zero-zero lockup. I used Cor-bon 158gr LSWHP +P ammo in both the 640 and 64. The ammo pictured is Buffalo Bore 158gr LSWHP and that is now the load of choice.

And while I'm a Glock man, I would have no qualms packing that 64 of mine.

The 3" DAO K-frame is very likely the perfect carry revolver.

I have a DAO 3" 64-3. One slick little tack driver. I have $400 in mine. Lately they seem to bring $450 to $500 depending on condition, box docs ect.

Get it! You won't be sorry you did. :)

ok, I'll bite. What's so radically different about them, other than removal of a SA sear?

Ok - I went ahead with the trade and I'm pleased so far. Below are some better pictures of the gun and grips. The grips appear to be S&W combat grips but are not a perfect fit for the gun. They ride above the backstrap and had to be whittled to fit in the front. They also do not have a serial # stamped. I wonder if anyone here knows if they are factory and what they might have been made to fit?

Thanks for your help

Not much to add, but I'm glad you got it. 3" RB 64s are hard to find, despite being one of the most fun and practical guns around. Near perfect Reagan-era carry pieces.

I'd get the next clean DAO 3" RB that I see, myself.

S&W did factory install those grips on some guns but I highly doubt they came on yours. The fitting is just too far off to have come out the door from S&W. Anything is possible... but those grips were very prized when they first came out and S&W usually fits grips to the frame very well.

Looks like they have a few scuffs on them, so if you like them I see no reason not to to sand them to fit your frame correctly, then refinish them.

If you don't care for them or don't want to work on them - Put them up for sale on Ebay or the S&W forum. It would be the easiest $150 you ever made.

BTW congrats. That's a nice peice.
