Looking for help on value of S&W 651-1. Gun has been sighted in, then wasn't shot anymore. As "new in box". Four inch barrel. Box and paperwork. Have model 51 family become collectable? Have not seen many on sale/bid sites. Thanks for any help.

About $350 in a brick and mortar store. Much higher on the internet, where the demand for certain "cult guns" has been driving prices to insane heights.

The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 3rd Edition lists:
ANIB $525
Exc. $450
VG $350
Good $200
Fair $150
Poor $100

They may be desirable to some, but I doubt they would be considered "COLLECTABLE", unless you can find someone that really is looking for one. There was two production runs: 902 units 1983-1988 with an "R" s.n. prefix and 2500 units 1991-1999 should have .125" front sight.
1994: Changed the extractor and added Uncle Mike's grips
1996: Round butt frame only
1997: Change the thumb piece
1997: Shipped with a Master trigger lock
They were discontinued in 2000.

I had one and should have kept it as it matched my M-63. powerwise there really isn't that much of a gain over 22 long rifle using CCI Velocitors in the same barrel length. muzzle blast is impressive. I happen to like the 22 mag so I'm willing to overlook the power difference

Where are you at? Different areas will vary wildly in price, if you're in California you can expect a bit more as it's basically a closed market for used guns. If you are in CA, give a shout as I'd be interested to talk to you about it. From what I've seen, $350-$450 unless you find someone who just really wants one and has a bunch of cash.
