I've heard people say that they've removed the magazine safeties from these guns. I haven't decided to do rhis yet, but I'd like to find out how to do it and whether it would substantially improve the guns' actions.

If I wanted to remove this feature, how would I do it? And is it easily reversable?

Thank!

I can't address the mechanics of it, but I see no particular benefit from removing it unless you just dislike mag safeties, period. I don't believe you will see any action/trigger pull improvement, as there is no linkage that impinges on the magazine itself.

I carried a 59, 659, or 6906 for about 15 years all together. You won't see any improvement in the trigger. There isn't much that can be done with the system used on S&W autos (basically the Walther system) to improve the trigger. The mag safety can be removed and is reversible. However, removal of any factory installed safety device is something that can haunt you if you have an ununtentional discharge.

There are advantages to having the magazine safety in tact. In a situation where you know you're going to be overpowered and disarmed, a magazine safety can keep you from being shot with your own gun. It also can be helpful if you have children that haven't been trained to handle firearms.

Still, I'd like to know how to remove it. Is it a major operation or is it something anyone can do?

No one seems to want to tell you. Not hard. Remove the rear sight. There is a small spring under it. Remove the spring. Presto. Keep the spring to replace and restore the safety.

I have had Ned Christiansen of Michguns (www.m-guns.com) work his magic on a couple of my 3rd gen guns. He knows how to really smooth them up.
