I am thinking about trying to find a used one at the comming up gun show. Which would be the better choice? I know they are very similar but does one have a better rep than the other? I like the hammer on the 669 because it can be cocked but it is not hanging out there.

Which has a better trigger, accuracy, reliability, rep? Are they the same size and weight?

The 669 is designed for concealment, it has a shorter barrel and slide, bobbed hammer, low profile sights, and a shorter grip frame. The 6906 is designed more as a service weapon, but many people can conceal them even though they are bigger and heavier than the 669. Both are equally reliable and probably pretty close in accuracy.

I've shot and sold many of both.

They're equally reliable and accurate, and almost identical in size. They both have the shorter barrel and grip frame - the 6906 is just the more modern "Third Generation" version of the 669. The 6906 has a smoother trigger.

Im not sure I agree with the last post.....respectfully of course.
The 669 is the same length barrel and grip...take the same mags...12 rnds.
The 6906 is a 3rd gen gun based on the 669 2nd gen gun......it just has the 3rd gen improvments.
I use my 6906 holster mold for 669 guns......the first run of the 06's had the 69's sharp squared trigger guard....later guns had the new improved rounded style.
IMO, the 3rd gen guns have a better track record than the previous S&W's....Ive had absolutely flawless reliability with all Ive had thus far.
Shoot well............

I don't know for sure but I think PCRCCW was talking about stans and not Erich. You 2 posted within minutes of each other.
Stans posted incorrect information.
The 669 and the 6906 are the same size. There may be a difference in the trigger guard (depending on when each was made) but they are the same gun. The 669 is 2nd generation and the 6906 is the 3rd generation.
I carried the 469 and 6904 for several years as issued guns with my dept. These are the same as the 669 and 6906 but in blued. I never warmed to the 469. Nothing wrong with it but I had been carrying a tuned 459 while on SWAT prior to going to investigations and being issued the 469. I carried it for a few months and then went back to the 459. Later we went to 3rd Gen S&W and I carried the 6904 while in investigations. It was OK too but still not up to the tuned 459. I later swapped the issued 6904 for an issued 5904 because I liked the feel of the 5904 better.
Nothing wrong with either the 669 or 6904. If the price was the same for either I'd go with the 6904. However, if I could get the 669 for a better price I'd go with it provided the comparison is equally sound guns.

DOH! I was thinking 5906, which is the full size service weapon. 6906 is the third generation version of the 669. Very little difference between the two. I really must start drinking a lot more coffee before posting in the morning! :banghead:

Thanks for all the replys.

S&W's model numbers are very confusing on their autos. They should have come up with a less complex system so people don't get them mixed up. One reason S&W autos are probably not more popular is nobody knows what they are.:D Seriously, unless you really look into it, it is hard to tell what is what just buy the model numbers. They have so many that it gets hard to keep track of them all.
