I picked up a S&W 686 357 Magnum 6 inch barrel stainless ( my first wheel gun ) The gun has a rail for a scope mount so it is missing the rear sight, and I do not want a scope. I have been searching high and low for a replacement rear sight and found a few but there are so many variations, I have no clue which one I need.

Can any one help me out on which sight I actually need? Do you need more information?

Thanks

Thanks and that is where the problem lies, do I need the .370, .385, or .400, or doesn't it make any difference? The stock rear sight S&W is .145....confused

Just call S&W with the model, serial#, and barrel length and they will send you the correct sight.
Be sure to tell them you need the screws too.

You can measure the horizontal distance yourself, its the gap, may need a micrometer.

Also, replacing the entire rear sight assembly is considerably easier than replacing the leaf only.

The way I read it, he doesn't have a rear sight to measure.

Common when buying a used S&W revolver with a scope mounted. Most folks don't realize how expensive the rear sight assembly is till they go to buy one, and is something that needs to be considered when buying a used Smith. Sometimes the scope that gets mounted is worth less than the sight assembly that gets thrown away.

I would also call S&W for the rear sight. They will know exactly what sight is needed.
