I bought a used S&W 686-5 with 2.5 inch barrel. The rear sight is rusting and generally beat up. I want to replace the whole rear assembly.

I see that Millet offers a white outline combat rear sight assembly.

Does anyone know a good source to buy it on-line?

Also, how do I know if I want a blade height of .312 or .360?

If not Millet -- do you suggest another manufacturer? Or just use a S&W replacement part?

Finally -- is this something I can do myself -- i.e., replacing the rear sight assembly -- or are there tricky little springs to bounce all over creation...?

Thanks!

It's an easy job. There is a spring under the sight, but if you observe reasonable care in lifting it out, there shouldn't be a problem.

I like the Millett sights. They're available online from Brownell's - see here for details. Also, your local gun store can order them for you: I've bought some from Clark Custom Guns in Louisiana.

As for blade height, check what you currently have and use the closest Millett equivalent. If in doubt, phone or e-mail Millett (see here) and ask them.

Seems like the first thing I do on any S&W I get is replace the rear sight with a Millett... absolutely love them and I am a 100% believer in Brownell's - they genuinely care about their customers and what they sell. I'm pretty critical of service from most companies - but you will never be disappointed dealing with Brownell's.
