Been lurking for a long time and thought that I would post on my good fortune. I stopped in a shop yesterday and found a 686 4inbbl 6 shot. It was marked $419. I had no real time yesterday to talk so I went back today just before he closed. I asked to look at it and it turns out to be 686 with no dash. So no lock which is always a great thing. It's in good shape it needed new grips but I liked it. He thought it was a police issue revolver at one time because of a 3 letter stamping on it (CSP). I asked for his best offer and he ended up taking $300. I think that I did good for that price. Only real downside is the initials stamped into it. I did not however buy it as a safe queen this will be a working gun. I also had some Pachmayer wraparounds at home that fit perfectly. I will post pics and range report as soon as I can.

Welcome to THR, and congratulations on a great deal on an even greater .357, the Model 686. I bought mine when they first came out, and I still think it's one of the best .357 revolvers out there in terms of design, balance, and overall quality. Have fun with your new aquisition.

S & W 686 is a great pistol. Heavy duty with good balance due to the heavy barrel design. 4 inch is about right. Owned two of them in my lifetime. Bought my first one back in the 80's for about 260 bucks.

That's what a used 686 was back in 1990. If it came with those grips you owe that shop more business. Nice job!

Sounds like you got a great deal. The 686 is one of the finest S&W revolvers made. While I love my Pythons I would not feel slighted if I had to rely on my 686 which I feel is on parr with the Pythons. I carried my 686 many nights as a security officer doing nightly mobile patrols. Call S&W and try to find out if it was a police department issue firearm. The CSP could be a state police agency, sheriff's patrol, or it could simply be someones initials. Verified cop guns hold a special place with some collectors.

I got one with a 2" barrel and one with a 4" barrel. They are great to shoot. You got a good deal on a great gun.

Sounds like you found a good deal!
The 686 is fun revolver to shoot. The thing I like the most about them is the trigger pull is smoother than the small J-frames (at least to me) and in single action it's nice and light. I have the 6 inch ported barrel, handles nice and good balance to it.
BTW--welcome!

Congratulations! Excellent price as well!

Here's my 4" 686-2 which was also a former police gun.

I got it for $399, but it needed a trip to the spa for a clocked barrel, and of course some smooth wood Hogue finger grips.

You'll never tire of it, it's a classic.

Welcome,
Does your 686 no dash have a M stamped before the 686 like M686? I believe the early 686’s had a recall from S&W. I believe the M stands for modified. If there is a M stamped before the 686 the modification has already been done. If I’m correct S&W will fix for free including shipping. You might give S&W a call to confirm the recall (my memory isn’t what it used to be).

The recall that Bullet mentioned I believe was for a modified firing pin bushing installed on the frame. I had mine done by a local gunsmith who was an authorized S&W warranty repair shop. The letter "M", which denotes that the modification was done, is located (on my 686), just above the model number on the inside of the crane assembly. If you need to have this done, I believe S&W will still do it for no charge.

You should be ashamed of taking advantage of that poor gundealer !! Send that 686 to me immediately, and go straight to your room and reflect on what you've done !!

Seriously though.. Congrats. i'm certain that you'll be very happy with it. This weekend would be a great time to play with your new toy, and let us all know how it shoots ;)

Congrats! Great revolver. Sad that S&W won't make them like that anymore. Enjoy your 686!
