LGS here in Western Washington State has a 9mm 99 OL for sale for $345 (I may be able to knock $25 or so off the price). Gun looks unused, 2 mags and plastic case. Feels good in my hand and the trigger is acceptable.

I've read what I can find on it via google search and everything says it's not a bad gun.

It will be my first "plastic" pistol, as I've got a bunch of S&W 39's and 59's, a couple of Berettas (1951, 92s, etc) plus a half dozen Smith revolvers.

Anyone have experience with these? I gather they are the S&W version of the Walther P99QA (Walther frame and Smith slide).

How's the price look. I checked gunbroker completed sales and it looks okay (considering I'd need to add shipping, FFL fee, and state tax), but I'd love to hear from some other folks what they think the going rate for these is.

Its a great gun and a good price unused. As you stated, the SW99 was a collaboration between Smith & Wesson and Walther. Some of the early Walther P99's (limited quantity of 5000, 40 S&W only with the 2nd digit in the serial number being 6) where actually sold with the frame being made by Walthers and the slide and barrel made by S&W, but they were marked as Walthers P99's. Mine is one of these pictured below. The slide and barrel of the SW99 are stainless steel and melonite-finished. The slide and barrel of the P99 are steel and tennifer-treated. The SW99 frame, although made by Walther in Germany, has a rounded trigger guard. Magazines are interchangeable between both. As with the P99, most who own the SW99 really like it.

OP, I would make that purchase without hesitation. I'm the happy owner of a SW990 compact 9mm. My SW990 has been superb over the last few years. It eats any ammo I have fed it without a hiccup. Its accurate and fits my hand like a glove. They are very underrated pistols in my opinion.

Being the "L" model its not quite like the 99QA (the "QA" version is closer to a Glock with a partially pre-cocked trigger).

The SW99 that I have is SW 99AS version which is basically a DA/SA version of the gun. I really like it, but honestly I pretty much detest anything with a traditional DAO trigger so I'd pass on this particular one. If you can find the AS or QA though I'd highly recommend the gun otherwise.

Well, I got it on Saturday (and had family all day Sunday and a full schedule on Monday), so range report after Tues.

Changed the backstrap to the smallest and it's no exaggeration to say it fits my hand as well or better than any other pistol I own. If it had a box of bullets through it, it certainly doesn't show it.

Only disconcerting thing about the gun is the barrel rattles around a bunch when out of battery....like it's just hanging loose in the slide. But lock her up and it's tighter than a drum. Can't wait 'till I get to the range and run it against my Smith 908 and a Stoeger 8000 (the old Beretta Cougar).
