So, I made a mess of my rear sights while trying to adjust them. I removed the set screw, which was the easy part, then soaked the sights with Liquid Wrench and Power Blaster. Put the slide in a vice and hit it pretty good with a brass punch and a 2 pound sledge. The sight never budged. However, it is scratched up pretty good. Any ideas?

Well, you could take it to someone with a sight pusher and have some night sights installed if the sights are all chewed up.

I couldn't move mine and didn't want to damage it. I took it to a Smith and he used a bigger hammer. You may as well take it to a Smith.

I read somewhere that the first Shield sights were loose and would move or fall out if the setscrew came loose, then they revise the rear sight and tightened it up and they are install by a robot with hydraulics.

I have no idea if this is true or not but I do know those sights are tighter than tight.

I had a really hard time moving mine and they were off quite a bit. I had to move both front and back to get mine on target.

For me it was worth it because it is very accurate and reliable.

Someone once told me to freeze the slide for 24 hours before trying to punch it out.

The shield sights are press fitted in, and they are tight. REALLY tight. I remember watching a factory tour video on youtube, and it showed the press they used to push the sights in. I'm googling now for it, if I find it i'll update post.

thanks guys. called S&W customer service today and told them of the problem. They are sending me a new rear sight at no charge. Good customer service. Now, I'll have to take it to a smith and have the sight replaced.

shield sight adjustment

My daughter just bought one. According to her manual the rear sight is not adjustable and no attempt should be made to move it. The front sight is drift adjustable.

My rear lost a dot...ended up having a LGS smith replace front and rear with fiber opts....he said he pounded on the old rear for 20 minutes.

I had no problem getting my factory sights off my Shield to install the Ameriglo I-Dot Pros on it.

I loosened the rear set screw and then applied heat with a heat gun for 15 to 30 seconds to get it nice and warm. It was pretty easy to then tap the rear and front sight out with a brass pounch and small hammer.

I prefer the straight 8 sight picture. It is uncluttered to my eye, and the big dayglow red front sight pops out for me.

I bought them straight from Ameriglo well over 18 months ago.

Love the idot pros. I have a set on my shield and a set on my glock 19. I really like the 2 dot set up
