S&W bringing back the 610

but, but, but IMHO if I wanted to shoot revolver competition it would be a 929 or .38 spl out of one of the numerous large-framed .357's.

I agree that this seems unlikely to primarily be a gamer gun, although, in addition to ICORE Lim 6 and mcb's IDPA suggestion, I could imagine this being useful for a bowling pin match where the pins are set far enough from the rear edge of the table to need a good shove to go 1-for-1.

For those who want a revolver for home defense, this might be an awfully good pick, though. The moonclips mean it could be left unloaded (if that was important to the person) and still brought into action very fast and rapidly reloaded in the event of multiple assailants; meanwhile, the 10mm is an extremely capable cartridge for personal defense. Throw in the capability to shoot inexpensive 40 rounds, and/or to handload down to 38 spl levels, and you've got something that might be of interest to some folks.

And for those of us who like the 1cm in bottom feeders, having a companion wheelgun might be kind of interesting. TBH, if I hadn't just committed my gun budget to a new competition blaster, I'd be thinking hard about it.

When Charter released the 41 mag ,
45 Colt & 45acp .. I sent a email asking about a 10mm .. They replied " The 10mm produces to much pressure "

Im not a fan of Ruger & S&W newer production revolvers .. Both companys QC are almost non existent..

So I'll stick with my Glock 10mm pistole's

I like the 10mm round. I have a 610-3 4" bbl and a 310NG. My DW Sportsman is finicky with my reloads and I am working on that. The G20-29 and 40 all work fine. The RIMZ polymer moonclips are easy on the fingers. No tools needed.

The 610 was one of the best ideas that S&W ever came up with. But a lot of guys don't like moon clips and the cartridge will never be as popular as the mainstays of the industry. I wish I had bought a 610 when they were first introduced. They were very nice guns.

Moon clips take up slightly less space in the pocket/belt than speed loaders. So, there is that.

My not-so-local GS just got in a new 6.5" 610, I can hear it beckoning from 35 miles away... Is it easy to scope one of these?

You should have no problem putting a scope on. Both that I have owned have screws in the topstrap like any other S&W.

I had one of the early 610's, before the dash. It was my most accurate DA wheelgun. 1.5" groups at 50 yards using the Tasco dot sight that I mounted with B-Square mounts. Used it to take a few deer too. In a fit of stupidity, I sold it. I am still kicking myself for that.

I love S&W revolvers (I've not had a lemon..yet), I really see potential in the 10mm (that's why I own a G40 MOS) but a marriage doesn't appeal to me at least but I'm tickled pink for those who like the idea. I have a S&W M69 that gets belt gun duty in snake/Black Bear country in eastern NC. First round shotshell followed by four full power 240gr HP's.

But for 10 mm for hunting I have the G40 MOS with red dot which for me at least is more better as a stand alone hunter.

This said I think choices are wonderful and if S&W thinks there's a market for it do it.:)

Niche application anecdote:

A Tenophile here added a first run 610 for IDPA SSR.
The thicker cylinder walls left more flat rear surface. The usual 10mm bullet is flatpointed. He could not just throw a clip at the cylinder the way you can a 625 with ball, he had to line it up as carefully as a speedloader.
The 646 would not have that problem. The titanium cylinders of those guns were not trouble free. I don't know if their standard grade of stainless would be adequate, but if not, there are stronger steels.

I'm glad the 610 is being offered again - even if it has the funny key hole Hillary lock. My plan would be to go w the long bbl. If the action needs work, which I assume it will, I have a gunsmith buddy who has expertly slicked up several of my revolvers.;)
