I tried a search on this forum but no matches. I bought a S&W Model 36 3" barrell, square butt revolver for my daughter for her birthday last year and she brought it by today for me to clean and oil. I bought it used, in NRA Excelltent condition. I usually buy new guns but this one was so nice I snapped it up especially at the price I got it. I noticed today that it has a pinned barrell. This, I think would make it an older gun than I thought. The serial number is 7460XX. When the cylinder is open, on the frame is stamped Model 36. Can anyone give me an estimate when this gun was made?

Greeting's Sir-

Does it have a letter prefix at the begining of the serial number?

If it does not have the letter prefix, then this weapon was
manufactuered between 1962 and 1969; as the book is not
very definitive as too the exact year. Most likely, is was
made between late 1967, or early 1968? But, too be for
sure contact the S&W historian, Mr. Roy Jinks.

And Greetings to you. Ala Dan

No there is no letter prefix. Just the numerical. If it had a letter prefix would that be a newer or older gun? Thanks, Jon

The SCSW lists as follows: 1962 starting s.n. 295000
1969 starting s.n. 786544
There is no information for dates between those years. That would indicate that Jim and Richard have no data on other years. You can call S&W directly and they may have year and perhaps a month, but no better. The exact shipping date can be acquired by down loading a form fromn their web site and mailing it along with $30 to S&W. You will get a letter from a gentleman by the name of Roy Jinks, giving you the details.

If your gun had a "J" before the s.n. then the gun would have dated 1979-1980 s.n.'s J670001-J760000.

Regards Pistol Toter
