morning fellas...

went to the big city yesterday for the annual smith & wesson days. the shop had deep discounts on new s&w's, factory reps, and all that good stuff.

i found a 5-shot 38 special snubbie that i just couldn't live without, and at the price, i decided not to live without it. so, i paid my $309.79 (after tax total) and left w/ my 637, s&w muffs, s&w coffee cup, a box of black hills ammo 158's, a 'bagmaster' ankle holster, a s&w window sticker, 5 s&w pens, a s&w pocketknife, all stuffed into a 'glock' bag. lol!

anyway, i'm not a fan of rubber grips on a revolver. anybody reccomend wood grips they like?

can this alloy-framed little thing handle +p, or should i just keep the loadings mild?

thanks fellas.

I think you did good ... :neener:

I presume this is a brand-new model 637, in which case S&W says +P ammo is O.K. That said, I wouldn't feed it a steady diet.

If you are going to carry it in an ankle holster I'd suggest you get a pair of the old-style S&W grips that used to come on the model 36/37. They are as small as possible, but leave you with maximum finger room - something that the currently favored "boot grips" don't because of a filler back of the trigger guard. If you like the grips that came on the gun (except for the material) any number of companies make similar ones out of wood.

Also for an extensive (and inexpensive) selection of various grips, go to:

www.cdnninvestments.com

But look out for they're $10.00 minimum shipping charge. You may want to buy more then one pair of grips to make the purchase(s) worthwhile.

Cool!
And I was in Watertown, SD at the gun show...missing S&W days... :banghead:
was this at Gary's Gun shop in Sioux Falls? I went to one there a few years back and it was super. The reps helped me out at the indoor range too.

yep, at gary's... forgot, i got a couple of range passes thrown in, too... don't know why - i told 'em i don't need them, but they put the passes in the case, so, oh well.

i go to about every gun show on the eastern side of the state, but they leave me unimpressed for the most part. the brookings show is fair, the mitchell show is good, the rest, especially the s.f. shows, suck.

old fuff- yes, brand new gun. i was carrying the gun in the ankle holster all day today, and i'm not particularly fond of it yet. i'll give it a couple more days, and if nothing changes, perhaps i'll move it to my belt.

any experience w/ the hogue bantam grips?

Only by reputation, but they make good stuff. They're wood grips are in a class by themselves, and they're rubber ones are made from a material that is harder then Pachmayr or Uncle Mikes.

Another company you might look at is Altamont. They make a lot of custom wood grips for the big companies (S&W, Colt, Ruger etc.) The have a web site at www,altamontco.com but it is under construction and only showing 1911 pistol stocks. However they make a full line for revolvers, including J-frame guns.

wow... reality check! i just priced the hogue bantam grips on their website, and they run a third of the cost of the gun! i have no problem putting a scope on a rifle that costs 2-3 times what the rifle does, but grips that cost a third of a handgun.... hmm, i better really think it over... they are just grips, but i think i want them...

Know what you mean about the money for grips, but it does not seem to stop me :uhoh: Must have pretty grips! If you have not made up your mind for sure, here is another place to check:

They have the regular sized j-round and also the boot grips.

I would like to order some grips from Ahrends for K and L frames--just got the brochure but there are not pics of what is all available. They do also make for J-frame though!

On those gun shows, do you know, are there any more coming up, Mitchell or Brookings or otherwise? I've usually gone to Sioux Falls too, and did not have good luck....heck, I had a difficult time finding a place to even park!

mitchell has one show per year, and it is around pheasant opener - usually the second weekend. sioux falls usually runs 2-3 shows per year, and i'm completely underwhelmed each time... won't go to another.

seems to me that the brookings show happens in january, but i don't recall for sure. i did see that gary's had some flyers for a show, but i didn't pay much attention to them so can't tell ya for sure if that was the brookings show or not. i have to go back there this weekend to get another holster and to have a barrel lopped off, so i'll check it out when i get there. or, you could call them and see what they know: 605-332-6119.

i checked out the badger site for grips. i like what they have, but didn't see any w/ checkering. guess i better call 'em now and find out. i decided i'm going to put new grips on, and i want 'em now!
