I was just given a fantastic 6" Model 14. (I took it to the range today and it's accuracy was unbelievable) The previous owner used to be a California Highway Patrolman and I know that he used to fire hot rounds through it now and again, which makes me curious as to what I should (or could)shoot through it. I have read a great deal about the K frames, but most of the info centers on the Model 19.

I was just wondering what kind of commercial rounds that I should fire through this pistol so that I can extend the life of this fantastic gift.
(grain and +P or no P ammo advice would be much appreciated)

Thanks in advance,
Philoe

As far as target rounds go 148 grain wadcutters are hard to beat. 125 grain RNFP's in Cowboy Action vel. are also great as a plinking / target round. I use and have used more of these two loading in 38 Special than all else put together. If you reload the above loadings the price gets even cheaper. As far as a carry load in 38 Special I am currently using Black Hills 125 JHP +p. Can't say I have had to shoot anything to see how if will perform but accuracy seems fine. Hornady TAP ammo might be worth a look at also in a +p carry load. Best of luck with you choices!

The 14-2 is fantastic with 148 wadcutters. One I had with target stocks and trigger could cluster all six rounds at 25 yards, if I did my part.

You can use any factory ammo other than +P and not worry about wearing out the gun. Just keep it lightly oiled and it will last longer than you will.

An acquaintance of mine had one that he said he put over 100,000 rounds through and it was still going.

Great guns. Congrats on the the fine gift!!

My 14-4

If your gun is marked Model 14 inside the yoke, it is fine for +P. However... it's such a nice gun, I'd stick with standard .38 special rounds for most shooting.

Have fun...

Like JoeHatley said, as a range only gun I only shoot light target loads through my 14-4, specifically handloaded 148 grain double end wadcutters. I wouldn't be too concerned about shooting +P, regardless.

And yes, these guns are capable of astounding accuracy. Mine doesn't get shot much, but I'll be holding onto it forever. Makes a cool companion for a Model 17 (14 on bottom):

148gr. hollow base wadcutters, 2.7gr. Bullseye, make a great target load. That's what I used to shoot PPC competition with 30 yrs. ago. Grat load and great gun.

JAD--

Are those Ahrends retro targets they're wearing? Very nice.
