S&W Lifetime Warranty

I've never purchased a S&W firearm. I did inherit one though. I have never carefully read the lifetime warranty but from my experience there seems to be some holes in it.

I inherited a S&W Model 10-5. I experienced some timing issues including total lock-up during rapid fire. I contacted S&W and sent the gun off via Fedex at my expense. Smith & Wesson did in fact correct the timimg problem and charged me $68 in addition to the shipping both ways. In the end, I had over $100 invested in getting the gun operational again.

Just what part of the weapon is covered under the lifetime warranty?

The warranty with my last Performance Center revolver states that it applies only to the original owner. The warranty covers the general terms of "defects in material and workmanship". No specific parts are listed. This warranty dates from February 1, 1989. Earlier than that, I don't know.
 
It's at their discretion. Used to be that gun manufacturers would stand behind anything, anytime. I've only had that attitude from Ruger lately.

Still, sounds like they billed you for one hour of shop time, maybe a few cheap parts and shipping. Not a bad deal, really. Besides, they should be more willing and able to stand behind their repair than an independant gunsmith who is struggling to get by.
 
Before everyone starts teeing off on S&W, lets get the facts straight.

The gun mentioned is NOT covered by S&W's lifetime warranty. M10-5 is a 1962 production firearm and S&W did not offer lifetime warranties for the original owners till the late 1980's.
 
I have bought a couple of used S&W guns that needed work. S&W did it free of charge.
 
Thanks, Robert. I knew the model in question was an earlier production model, but I wasn't sure whether or not S&W even had a warranty back then. Also, S&W requires a copy of the bill of sale with the owner's name on it in order to receive warranty service. Again, for models after Feb 1, 1989.
 
Hmmm, in my case they never asked for a bill of sale. But then again my Smiths are fairly recent and I was diligent in mailing in those warranty cards/registering online.
