I have to send in my 637 to get refinished under warranty. The "clearcoat" is flaking off. They sent out a FedEx call tag so they will cover air shipping both ways. So far so good.

Anyone have experience with their warranty process? How long does something like this take?

Also, my trigger seems to "bind up" (for lack of a better word) every once in a while when firing the gun. It almost seems like it gets to a certain point in the pull and then has much more resistance. It only does this ocassionally. Any ideas?

I mentioned the trigger thing on the paper I am sending with the gun. Maybe Smith will address it.

Now that I think about it, I've never had to use a gun manufacturer's warranty so this is all new to me.

S&W's turnaround for non major warranty issues is about 10 buisness days. Say two weeks. They're great in that respect. Sometimes when a S&W revolver is new it will have a gritty and inconsistent action. And in the hands of some shooters these imperfections can cause the trigger to bind. Nothing to it. Just dry fire away. Good for the gun, in a wearing in kinda way and definitely good for you!

Warranty issues

Hello:
I also sent one back for the same issue. It was back within 2 week's. it looked like new. Sad note is it can and will "PEEL" again as they have not changed the process used to apply the finish !! Hammerdown.

Yeah, I figured it would happen again eventually but I wanted to give them one chance at least.

As for the gritty trigger, I bet I have shot and dry-fired this pistol 10,000 times. It is as smooth as shooting it will ever make it. The binding has been there since day one and is still there. After a few hundred rounds, it smoothed out but did not disappear.

Maybe they will address it.

S&W is funny about trigger pulls. I have heard they will swap out whatever you have in your sent gun with new springs as a matter of routine. My wife's 586 has a sweet trigger when it was sent and came back heavy in comparison.

Other than that, the two times I have had issues with my wife's 586, I have had great support from them. They took care of both repairs under warranty so I cannot complain. I shot the hell out of that pistol and still do.

One time I sent a revolver back to them, I had the strain screw backed out about half a turn. They returned it with the screw turned all the way in (which was how I got the gun when I bought it). So I guess they restore it to factory specs. I think they advise you about this too in their literature.

I returned a 38-2 with a cracked
frame.In less than 2 weeks i had
a new 638 waiting for me at Fed
Ex.I was pretty impressed by
that.

I sent in a NIB 642 for a gritty cylinder release and got it back VERY quickly. I'm waiting for a label for a 686 for a heavy chamber and hope it goes as well. I've had nothing but GREAT service from S&W and I emailed them and wrote them a letter to tell them to keep up the good work!

My experience was positive...

My scandium 340SC experienced cylinder face erosion early on. S&W sent me a pre-paid Fed-Ex shipper which I used and the gun came back in about 7 working days.

I was completely satisfied, especially with them pre-paying the shipping. The original cylinder's coating was probably defective because I never experienced any other problems.

Some manufacturers offer lifetime warranties but the shipping charges, which can be considerable, are on your dime.

Several years ago (12?), I bought a new Model 29 with nickle plating and regular , square wooden grips. On my first trip to the range, I noticed after about 30 rounds, the nickle plating had come off the front of the cylinder, the frame in front of the cylinder, and the crane. My dealer sent it back to the factory. I enclosed a letter describing what happened, and I asked about the price of wood, finger grooved grips. 2 weeks later, I had my revolver back from S&W. It had the best nickle finish I've ever seen on a gun. Also in the box was a new set of wooden, finger groove grips. Great customer service. :)

My only experience was negative. They couldn't make a 940 extract with anything less than a croquet mallet on the ejector rod. I sold the gun to someone after explaining the problem.
