well, Ive been wanting a new pistol for a while now, and I really like this one, little bit of nightstand gun, car gun, and some range time too, my question is.. are these good guns now? has s&w fixed some of the early bugs it had? and lastly whats the recoil like for one in 9mm? Thanks, Brian.
 
I love mine, only had it for about a month now, but I've put about 1,000 rounds through it in that time with no issues. The recoil is light and unnoticeable to me, which this is my first poly-gun and I expected it to be quite a bit more. Right now, I'm using a CZ P-01 for my carry gun and I shoot my Beretta 96, RIA 1911, along with the M&P down at the range for practice. About to join IDPA at one of the local ranges here and will probably start out with the M&P as my IDPA gun.

Ive had my m&p 9 now for about 8 months. Put about 1000+ rounds thru it so far. I have never had a problem with mine. Recoil is nothing out of this pistol. Takedown and cleaning is easy also. I love it.
 
No problems to report with my 9mm compact (purchased Dec. 2006). It has functioned perfectly from the very first round. The 9mm is not a hard kicking cartridge to start with. In the M&P it is very light, due to the comfortable grip and chunky slide that puts more weight on top.
 
I have the M&P 9c and besides the High Powers that I have fired, it's as nice a gun as I have ever shot. I can carry it, I can use it as a range gun. Accurate. Very nice fit and finish, easy to break down, and with the different backstraps it's versatile for many hand sizes. I can't say enough good about it.
 
That trigger is easily tweaked. ;)

As far as the compacts in particular and the M&P series in general, see my sigline.

If you're using it as a non-CCW piece, I'd get the fullsize gun. Here's why:

1. Marginally better grip. Not a huge advantage, but the support at the heel is nice.

2. Longer sight radius = more practical accuracy.

3. longer barrel = slightly more velocity. Not much, but some.

4. More onboard rounds

5. The fullsize models seem to have less reliability issues.

I shoot the 40s, and they handle nicely. I cannot imagine the 9c being anything but a pussycat.

I fired a friend of mine's (full-sized). Personally, I'm sold on it. Light recoil (maybe it's just because I'm used to shooting .40's), decent accuracy, and didn't have any malfunctions. I'd recommend it.
 
I only have 1 problem with it. I can't carry it and my M&P 40C. I switched to the 40c for the bigger bullet. But never had a problem with my 9c either.
 
well from hearing all of these great reviews, i think ill stop by the fun shop and see what they have it priced for, or i might just get it from buds...
 
Consider some better guns- CZ SP-01, P-01, 75b, Hi-power, XD, Glock, etc. I don't trust S&W (the Sigma! Oh, my god! Just throw it at the bg), they are resting on their laurels. They don't even sell a good revolver anymore. The M&P looks like a mall rat drawing.
 
I disagree about S&W being 'past tense'. The sigmas may be crap, but the M&P is excellent, and is nothing at all like the sigmas. In fact there are many LE agencies switching to them due to their quality. Check out http://mp-pistol.com/boards/ if you'd like some more input from actual owners. I lurked there for a while to hear if there were any problems before I got mine, and got some real good information. And even if there is a problem (which there won't be) S&W has excellent support and will even pay for shipping to fix any problem. I have owned my 9c for a few months and about 1000 rounds and have found it to be flawless. I love the fit and accuracy of this pistol. I find the felt recoil negligible on the 9c as well. Bud's Gun Shop has a special on them right now (make sure you order the one w/o the internal lock and mag disconnect safety) and you get the $50 rebate and 2 free mags from Smith. I just don't see how you can go wrong. I like the M&P so well, I'm actually looking at picking up a full-sized as well...

What in the name of John Moses Browning are you talking about?

By any objective measure the M&P is in the same league as the Glock/XD/*insert name of polymer duty gun here*. The rest is personal preference. It fills a different niche than, say, a BHP (a design I adore and personally prefer to the M&P), so you start comparing various types of ovoid fruit once you open the comparisons up that far. Why not just get a FAL?

The Sigma has nothing to do with the M&P and vice versa, except that it is 1. a gun 2. plastic and 3. sold by S&W.

The M&P is a huge step forward for the company in the design department, and is making crazy inroads on the police duty gun market. If this is "resting on its laurels", hey, ok. We can just end the debate right now, since I don't think we're speaking the same language.

Heck. If they stuck with revolvers, as seems to be the common lament, I would think that would be a good example of resting on one's laurels.

But whatever.

CZ 42 is a S&W hating fool who does not know what he is talking about. i love my M&P .45 and recomend you buy one in any caliber you like...
 
I guess Julie Goloski would disagree with me too, huh? You're probably right Coronach, it just comes down to personal taste between plastic autos like the M&P and XD. Pretty much all design flaws get worked out within a year, but that Sigma just left such a bad taste in my mouth. To be fair, my best pistol is a S&W.
