I want to hear from someone who has firsthand knowledge of both of these rifles. I am only asking about accuracy, not which one you like, or the one to kill zombies, or the one you would pick if it was the last gun on earth. To keep it simple lets describe accuracy in MOA or shot group size.

Having experience with both rifles, I would say that the 10/22 has most room for improvement. Putting some fine glass on there, and a bull barrel will put you at the top of your game. The M&P is, to me, more accurate out of the box. It takes optics really well, but as far as I know, there's no barrel option out there.

so twkremer your saying out of the box S&W, after a tune up Ruger. Is there anyone who can +1 this?

I'll second that. My S&W shoots great, my 10/22 shoots tighter. My 10/22 has an after market barrel and a decent scope. If I put that scope on the S&W, it may shoot close to the 10/22, but not better. The 10/22 has scads of after market parts. :)

Actually, comparing the S&W to a Ruger that is more comparable, I would say the Ruger probably has it beat in the accuracy department too. The SR-22 has a better, heavier barrel is reportedly much more accurate than your typical carbine. I'll take the SR-22 over the cheap feeling S&W any day of the week.

I own both. the 10/22 is more accurate once you tune it. But the MP22 is lighter, easier to use and clean, and a damn fun gun. They both serve there purpose.

got both, and agree w/ the consensus: m&p is more accurate out of the box, and the better gun if you want to do minimal work to it. the ruger has such great aftermarket support that its hard to not be able to eventually get it configured into exactly what you want.

if i had neither gun, and wanted an auto 22 and know what i know now, i would go smith and never look back.

Ive got 3 10/22s and one smith ar. the smith will hands down outshoot all my rugers. Fun factor theres no comparison the smith has it all over the rugers. Both designs are very relliable with ammo they like. Ruger has one big advantage though. You can buy two of them for the price of a smith.

With a 4moa dot at 50 yards I can shoot a 2 MOA group (1") with my ampersand gun. I don't know what the Ruger will do, but I am please with what I have and it is a good practice gun to use instead of my AR15.
