S&W M&P9 Problems

Though it can be "cool" to have your slide drop upon inserting the mag, it is not a normal operation of the pistol. Furthermore, you are relying on, and practicing with, a so-called "feature" that does not translate to every pistol. One reason for the overhand slingshot method is it works with all pistols, whether it be a Ruger P95 or a HK USP. Not saying this will happen, but contiunuity of training can save your life, and lack of it can cost you your life. One example...this is where you hear of people forgetting to disengage the safety on guns they usually don't carry, as they forget it's there, and have never had to practice it when they carry their Glock 90% of the time.

IOW, you are teaching yourself bad habits. We can argue this for 12 pages, but, in the end, we all know it's true.

The slide drop on inserting the mag, i believe is from hitting it at a 45 degree angle when inserting and not a straight 90 degrees. If the magpul video guys are to be believed. I think this 'trick' works on Berettas and some CZ clones as well.

As far as your extraction problem goes, I've got nothing.

Any firearm can have problems......that said, I would give S&W a chance to make it right. I have bought 2 new M&Ps (9mm & 40S&W) and not a single malfunction. The 9 probably has 3,000 rds through and the 40 about 1,000.
The M&P9 is one of the few guns I wouldn't ever get rid of. Lifetime warranty and fits my hand like a glove. A M&P45 is next.
YMMV

Ok thanks for all the help guys! I plan on cleaning it thoroughly and putting about 100 rounds through it Thursday. Just a little bit more info if this helps. When I had the double feed FTE I was using Winchester Winclean ammo with ten rounds in the magazine. Hopefully This was just a one time occurrence. I might have S&W look at the slide Issue though. I know there's a lot of people who don't mind the automatic cambering. However I just like being in control of it.

Happy shooting!

The first "issue" is not a malfunction, it is a feature. As far as "if it chambers the round" concerns go, if the gun would chamber the round from dropping the slide with the slide release, it will chamber from slamming in the magazine. I can't think of any practical situation in which you would want to load a fully-loaded magazine and leave the slide locked back, except in a training situation. In that case, load the magazine gently, and the gun will stay at slidelock. Or, failing that, put the thumb of your strongside hand against the slide-release to hold it up. Every M&P I've ever seen does this, the gun is not malfunctioning.

One doublefeed doesn't mean the gun is unreliable. All guns will malfunction sooner or later, what matters is which ammo causes it problems (my M&P hates truncated-cone style ball ammo, so I avoid it), and the rate of failure with whatever ammo you choose to use (ball ammo for paperpunching, defensive ammo for 'serious' use). Keep track of the type of ammo and which magazine caused any given malfunction.

Make sure you take a nylon brush and really scrub the inside of the extractor's hook. Mine gets built up with gunk all the time.

Haifisch, we all know how you feel by now. Stop bashing and offer constructive criticism. Otherwise, zip-it please, it is getting tiresome.

That automatic round chambering might come from how you insert your mag. When I qualify at the range with my Sig 226, it will do it too. I wondered about it, until it occured to me that I was inserting a fresh mag and slapping it home firmly enough that it was knocking the slide off of the slide lock and releasing the slide. I didn't realize I was so rough with it until after shooting a bunch of rounds at the range left the palm of my support hand hurting. Just a thought...

Thanks for the advice everyone! I just put about 100 rounds through the M&P yesterday with no problems. So I'm not too worried. Thanks again, happy shooting!
