I just received from my father-in-law what I think is a pre 10 M&P.The serial # is C886xx..38 spec..nickel...4" barrel .. square.. 6 shot.. fixed sights. No model # on frame that I can find.What year is it and am I correct on the model? Thx...Ron

I also have a model 10-5..serial # D2530xx..Blue...5" barrel..square..fixed ..6 shot..38 spec..What year?

This is my 1st post.If I've done it wrong,let me know!!

some body will give you the years but my book is not with me right now and if they have not done so by tommorow I will post it for you.

The m&p with a C prefix most likely was made in the 1950's. the numbers like 10 and the such started in 1958 so your pistol predates that. A true nickle pre number pistol will bring a slight premium over the others.
 
The pre-10 is from the 1948 (starting at C1) to 1951 (ending at 226003) period. You can interpolate between those dates and come up with a year that's more likely than the others, but it would only be an approximation. According to SCSW, it must be a pre-10. The only other models numbered in that range were the (pre) 11, 12, and 45. Of those three, only the pre-12 was chambered in .38 Special and it was not introduced until after the date your gun was produced.

The 10-5 is from the 1969 (starting at D90001) to 1970 (ending at D330000) period. Interpolating between those dates would make 1970 more likely.
