I have a S&W mod 60-4, and it says " CTG " on the barrel. I have seen mod 60's and 60-4 's. If anyone knows what the CTG stands for and if the gun will take +p ammo I'd appreciate the information.

Thanks in advance.

CTG is the abbreviation for Cartridge.

As in .38 S&W Special Cartridge.

Yes, it will take +P ammo.

Thanks for the response.
I was told by my LGS that it stood for "chief special target model."

Mercy!

S&W has used CTG as the abbreviation for Cartridge on every revolver they ever made for a very long time.

Its a caliber marking, nothing more.

The Chiefs Special target was the now discontinued Model 50, with a two or 3 inch barrel, blued steel and adjustable sights. In 1990 S&W made a run of target sight, three inch barrel Model 60-4s.
PS229s gun is one of these. Whether S&W actually called it a Chiefs Special Target is another matter.
But, as mentioned above, CTG has been the abbreviation for Cartridge for over 100 years.

I have one just like it and it's one of my all-time favorites. It's a gem and they are getting hard to replace.

That just makes my head hurt.

C T G somehow equates to Chief Special Target Model... or: CSTM?

I wonder what they'd make of ACP or Mag?

Todd.

CTG is for Camouflage Tactical Gun. Obviously the one you have has been stripped an refinished in stainless. CTGs in like new condition are not only hard to find but among the most valuable in the history of the S&W lineup. I'm sure Driftwood Johnson will be able to tell some more insider tips on the rare CTGs.

Also, whomever refinished your revolver also took a grinder to the uber cool tactical flashlight/laser mount on the under side of the barrel. Not cool...of all the low down dirty things...if I had a rubber hose...

That's why I like this forum. Lot's of laughs and great info. (I never knew that was a "Camouflage Tactical Gun") Doh!

Thanks again to all.

Oh, boy! Now we will have people posting about wanting an S&W CTG, and others asking how to get rid of the blue look and restore that camouflage finish.

Jim

Jim, around once a month we get a thread with someone wanting to ID a S&W CTG. The unusual thing here is that someone in a gun shop got it wrong.

Mind you, if we keep this conversation up we could end up with enough Google hits to spread the idea of the S&W Camouflaged Tactical Gun. Some people only read the three line summary rather than click on the search link....

I do believe the employee I spoke to misunderstood my question, but again he told me he was new. Identifying the gun brand was no issue, but I received conflicting info on the "CTG" designation.

Thanks again for all the help.

I hope that LGS didn't give any other good advice/info.

Yeah, no kidding. It would seem in their case that "LGS" stands for the clients they rely on to stay in buisness:
Laughably Gullible Suckers. :D

To the OP, you should drop back by sometime and educate that guy.

In an admittedly weak and tepid defense of the new LGS employee, few of us have not made one or two rookie mistakes that either have or could engender much laughter and ridicule were they to be posted all over the Internet. Fortunately for the LGS guy, ignorance is a curable condition and hopefully one day he will laugh and tell that story on himself. Either that or he will remain a fool and be elected to congress in a landslide.
